On this occasion, the writer would like to discuss the fascinating facts of one of the characters in Captain Tsubasa, Ken Wakashimazu. The “Karate Keeper” was initially Tsubasa’s opponent in Meiwa and Toho. However, eventually, he joins Tsubasa and the others in the All Japan Junior Youth. Here are some facts about him!
1. Shares Some Striking Resemblance with Katagiri
Munemasa Katagiri who works as a talent scout for the Japan Football Association has long hair just like Wakashimazu and always wears sunglasses. He was once a Japan National, but due to his eye injury, he had to retire from football.
It’s why he always wears sunglasses. In his younger day, Katagiri looked so similar to Wakashimazu!
2. Self-taught Himself to Become A Goalie
Unlike Genzo Wakabayashi who had been trained since childhood, Wakashimazu self-taught himself to plays as Meiwa FC’s goalkeeper. He’s an eccentric goalkeeper who combines goal-keeping techniques with his family’s Wakado-Ryu martial art skills.
Wakashimazu can even use the goalposts to bounce and cross the goal line to stop the ball on the far post.
3. Wakabayashi’s Rival
Ever since Nankatsu met Meiwa in the final of Japan Elementary School Championship, Wakashimazu has become the rival of Wakabayashi. From being opponents to teammates, Wakashimazu continued to regard Wakabayashi as a rival. Wakabayashi aspires to be the best goalkeeper in the world, while Wakashimazu always tries to be better than Wakabayashi.
In the Japan Junior Team’s roster, Wakabayashi has always been chosen as the main choice for the goalkeeper position, while Wakashimazu spends his time on the bench. However, Wakabayashi always supports him to improve. Wakashimazu was also credited with being able to get Japan Juniors to the final when Wakabayashi hasn’t played for the national team.
4. Hyuga’s Best Friend
Wakashimazu had been friends with Hyuga since they’re both still in Meiwa FC. He also followed Hyuga who went to Toho Academy alongside Sawada. From elementary to being picked as Japan’s representatives on the international stage, the three of them have always been together.
The bond between Hyuga and Wakashimazu is so strong, they display such great teamwork, especially when they’re being trained under the guidance of Coach Kira. Interestingly, Wakashimazu refers to Hyuga as “Captain”, although their real captain is Tsubasa.
5. Playing As A Striker
As he grew up, Wakashimazu grew into a tall young man. Coach Kira, who trained him since childhood was chosen as the coach for the U-23 national team. Kira then called Wakashimazu up for the team, but plays him as an attacker. It’s solely because there is no tall player in the team, so Kira was worried about the team’s chance of post-plays.
Wakashimazu starts as a substitution, coming up to the pitch when he’s required to. As a striker, Wakashimazu also relies on his Wakado-Ryu martial art skills to perform volleys and overhead kicks.
