Comedy is among the most popular genres in the movie industry as the comedy movies can relieve your stress and entertain your mind with their amusing, head-scratching and absurd moments throughout the story.
Curiously, Indonesia is known to have some of the best comedy movies that are considered legendary as well in the history of the nation’s movie industry, such as these five movies you should definitely watch:
1. Mana Tahaaan
Warkop DKI comedy group is commonly regarded by Indonesian citizens as the king of comedy with many comedy movies they star in ready to make you burst out laughing non-stop, including one of their best movies called Mana Tahaaan.
Released in 1979, this movie stars some of the best actors and actresses of its era like Elvi Sukaesih, Rahayu Effenci, Edi Gombloh and the trio Warkop DKI comedians Dono, Kasino and Indro as they play in a movie that tells the story of Slamet, Paijo, Poltak and Sarwani who all live in one boarding house and conduct some bizarre shenanigans together.
During its premiere, Mana Tahaaan managed to attract up to 400,816 audiences which, at that time, was a fantastic number.
2. Samson Betawi
Released in 1975, Samson Betawi is truly something special as the movie depicts Samson, played by actor Benyamin who travels from his village hometown to a big city and grows into a respectable, superior man than who he used to be.
Samson Betawi narrates Samson’s adventure in the big city as he experiences some hilarious things which he thinks are very bizarre, and the movie for some reason lets the audiences know that Samson’s biggest weakness is his shaved armpits.
3. My Stupid Boss
Based on the novel with the same name, My Stupid Boss is also one of the best Indonesian comedy movies about Bossman (Reza Rahadian) who has a hilarious and entertaining relationship with his personal employee named Kerani (Bunga Citra Lestari).
Movie director Upi manages to capture the hilarious essences of Bossman’s authoritative rulership and shenanigans with her entertaining script and dialog as well as the brilliant performance of the stars.

4. Cek Toko Sebelah
Directed by Ernest Prakasa, Cek Toko Sebelah tells the struggle of a teenager who has just gone home to his hometown to take over his father’s store after going overseas for his study.
While there is an obvious moral to learn from the protagonist’s failures in his journey, the story itself is quite light with some humorous conversations going on between the casts, making it an instant recommendation for fans of light comedy movies.
5. Koala Kumal
Koala Kumal is essentially a love story about a standup comedian named Raditya Dika who caughts his girlfriend, played by Acha Septriasa, cheating on him and finds solace in a woman called Trisna.
Although the premise might not make it seem like a comedy movie, Raditya Dika’s experience as a standup comedian manages to seep into the movie with its light dialog and many hilarious shenanigans he has in store.
