Throughout the lifespan of Batman’s comic books, cartoons, movies and video games, this DC superhero has always been fighting for justice with his faithful Batmobile. Considering the length and varieties of the story, there are many variations of Batmobiles with their own histories and facts.
This leads to the birth of many many bizarre Batmobile myths among the fans of Batman series a.k.a. Bat-fans. Until the release of The Batman movie in 2022, there have been five myths so far that are considered the weirdest ones. As for whether they’re correct or merely myths, let’s find out right here!
1. Robin Creates the First Batmobile
Myth: Based on the story of a Batmobile auction during early 2007, the first Batmobile was born in the 50s when Batman injured his leg. His sidekick, Robin created the first Batmobile so that the bat hero could save Gotham City much easier!
Fact: Unfortunately, this myth is false. Firstly, the concept of Batmobile had existed 10 years before that story came out. Second, said story is taken from Detective Comics’ story vol. 156 titled “The Batmobile of 1950” where Batman and Robin both created their Batmobile and Batman himself finished the project.
2. The Missing 1954 Batmobile
Myth: In 1954, Paramount Studios released the third entry of the Batman series and used a Batmobie based on the early design of Lincoln Cosmopolitan. During the production at a local farm, the studio didn’t pay the rent with cash and the farm owner took the Batmobile as the fee. Thus, the 1954 Batmobile was gone without a trace until a Bat-fan found the missing Batmobile
Fact: Again, this Batmobile myth is unfortunately false. The picture of the missing Batmobile came out in 2002 with many different versions of the story. But it turns out that there was never a third entry of the Batman TV series to begin with. Additionally, the car itself looks bizarre because the front shape does look like Lincoln Cosmopolitan, but the rear side looks more like GM’s concept car “Le Sabre.” Keep in mind, the concept of car customization in the 1950s was still nonexistent and customizing a car for a nonexistent series was too good to be true.
3. George Barris Created Batmobiles for Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin
Myth: George Barris or Barris Kustoms built several Batmobiles for Batman/Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin
Fact: Whew, this is yet another false Batmobile myth. Although George Barris is famous among the Bat-fans for giving birth to some of the best Batmobiles in the history of the series, he actually did not create Batmobiles for the aforementioned movies.
Anton Furst created the Batmobile for Batman/Batman Returns, while Barbara Ling created the concept for the Batmobile for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin while Trans FX Inc. from Moonpark, California built the vehicle.

4. “The Tumbler” Batmobile from Batman Begins Can Actually Function Properly
Myth: The Tumbler is a Batmobile that can function properly like in the Batman Begins movie
Fact: Yes, this Batmobile myth is correct! Nathan Crowley and Batman Begins producer Chris Nolan wished to create a movie vehicle that could function properly, unlike many movie vehicles which at that time were all show and no go.
They created four The Tumblers that could function well: Two regular cars, one “flap” car with special hydraulics system and one “jet” car with propane-fueled jet engine. All of these Batmobiles are drivable, they can move fast, turn, break through walls and jump like that scene from the movie when The Tumbler jumps to the Bat Cave.
5. “The Tumbler” Batmobile Once Became Pace Car for NASCAR
Myth: The Tumbler once functioned as a pace car for a NASCAR competition on June 19 2005.
Fact: Another correct Batmobile myth! To promote the Batman Begins movie, Michigan International Speedway held the annual NASCAR competition with the title “Batman Begins 400,” which means this was the first time a movie ever sponsored a NASCAR competition.
During the competition, The Tumbler became the pace car, there was a Batman-theme festival in the middle of the oval circuit and Batman became the race marshall and announced the iconic line, “Drivers, start your engines.”
And those are all the most bizarre Batmobile myths out there, of which some are correct and the others are false. Will a new myth be born from the upcoming The Batman movie next year?
