Dune is one of the most interesting movies to watch. It's great quality makes this movie a lot of talk and become a recommended movie to watch in 2021. For those who don't know, Dune is actually a remake of the 1984 version.

As a remake, there are some of the most striking differences. The author has compiled several complete discussions regarding the most striking differences in the Dune movie between the 1984 version and the 2021 version. What are they? This is the full review for discussion.

1. Baron Harkonnen

As portrayed in Lynch's movie, Baron (Kenneth McMillan) is an absolutely disgusting man with boils all over his face and a habit for torturing animals and humans. A scene depicting him sexually assaulting a young man not only demonstrates his indifference to others, but also what the book depicts is very accurate.

Baron Villeneuve (Stellan Skarsgård) who appeared in the 2021 version is still a terrible villain. But instead of being a psychopath, he became a character who relied more on his brain. He is manipulative and intelligent, plus his sexual preference is erased. This change is quite good and interesting for modern audiences.

2. Sandworms

Sandworms from Dune are some of the most iconic creatures to appear. In the 1984 version, Sandworms became creatures that had a very significant role and appeared continuously. This animal was also important to Paul Atreides, taking back Arrakeen from Harkonnen.

In contrast, sandworms are rarely seen in the Villeneuve or 2021 versions. This is probably done out of a desire to make them a mysterious threat. When viewed, this creature also has a design that does not look like a giant worm. Unlike in Lynch, fans will have to wait for the second part of the movie to see if Paul (Timothée Chalamet) learns how to ride it!

3. Internal Monolog

An interesting thing that happens quite often in the 1984 version is that Lynch accesses the character's thoughts a lot through internal monologues. They often quote directly from the reflections they felt in the book version and later removed in the 2021 version of Dune.

In Villeneuve's version, the actors appear more emotionally resonant because they don't stare blankly into space as they perform monologues. This certainly feels more modern than having to do a monologue like the old school version.

4. Story Development

The development of the 1984 version of the story is different from the 2021 version. In the previous version, Lynch explained more in detail about what happened, while in the 2021 version, Villeneuve gave more freely to the story. The audience can imagine and have an opinion about what really happened because the 2021 version always presents unique mysteries in each plot.

He hides various important details and does not show it directly to the viewer.

5. Visual

Visuals are definitely something different in this movie. The 1984 version of Dune has a more lively visual with costumes, makeup and ornaments. Some aspects, like anything related to Baron Harkonnen, are so visually intense that they are distracting for some viewers.

While the 2021 version to create luxurious visual effects more often depicts large rooms where the characters look small. This helps to represent the world that is indeed magnificent through the design of the large building.

The visual effects are some of the most sophisticated in theaters today, although earlier versions also had some pretty good visuals for their era.
