“All show and no go” is a popular sarcasm for men who are all about appearance but have zero interest in helping other people. If you want people to love you, being good-looking is not always the answer as being selfless in helping other people in need is more than enough. Take some superheroes for example, people still love them for their heroicness despite not being the best looking heroes around.
Among those superheroes, here are five notable heroes with below average appearance. Remember to not body shame them or any other person because the goodwill in their heart is all that matters, all things considered.
1. Beast
As the name suggests, Beast is a superhero who looks… beastly. Originally named Hank McCoy, he is a mutant who first appeared in Stan Lee’s X Men comic and is a good friend with Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X, the founder of X Men.
Hank McCoy is originally a good-looking man with genius intelligence, with his only bizarre trait being his mutated monkey-like feet that can grab items and hang on to things upside down. He builds Cerebro machine with Professor Xavier and Erick Lessner to find and assemble the mutants all over the world, then they create X Men and Xavier School to teach mutants kindness and protect them from human discrimination.
He once fell in love with Professor Xavier’s adoptive sister Raven, a blue-skinned mutant who can change her shape into a beautiful figure. Hank tried to cure Raven’s illness by taking her blood sample and examining it, but the conflict between Erick and Xavier due to their differences in regard to mutants and humans caused Raven to side with Erick the Magneto.
Raven was amazed with Erick’s ideology that a mutant is something to embrace, not an illness to cure. Disappointed with her choice to not be cured of her illness, Han McCoy ultimately injected Raven’s blood sample to himself in hope to cure the mutation on his feet.
However, instead of being cured, Hank turns into blue like Raven and then changes his name into Mystique. Another side effect is that he grows hair all over his body like a monkey, hence he’s also called Beast. Despite that, Hank is still a kind superhero who helps many people until he grows old, and he even becomes the Minister of Mutant Coordinator that helps solve the conflicts between humans and mutants.
2. The Thing
First appeared in Marvel’s Fantastic Four comic, The Thing is originally Ben Grimm who befriends his roommate Reed Richards a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic during their college years. Due to an accident in space, Ben turned into a terrifying humanoid with rock skin and super strength.
The Thing is full of self-loath, self-hatred and self-pity due to his new appearance as his wife also left him. On the brink of suicide, the other Fantastic Four characters consoled him until he finally rose up to become a superhero. He then saves the world and finds love in a deaf woman who then becomes his new love.
In the original script that Stan Lee gave to his partner Jack Kirby, The Thing was originally meant to be a ‘burden,’ but then the idea’s scrapped as his appearance evolved in years into ‘the most beloved member of Fantastic Four.’
3. Hulk
Hulk is perhaps the most popular ugly duckling superhero in the Marvel Universe. First appearing in The Incredible Hulk #1 comic by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in May 1962, the Wizard magazine hailed him as one of the seven best Marvel Comics superheroes in 2008, and Empire Magazine ranked him the fifth of the best 14 Marvel comic superheroes.
Hulk is originally the alter ego of Dr. Bruce Banner when he’s engulfed in desires and emotions. After Banner accidentally got hit by the gamma bomb explosion he discovered, he became Hulk who’s a giant, humanoid monster that made Banner’s life very complicated.
According to Stan Lee, Hulk is inspired by Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein. Despite an initial desire for Hulk and Banner to become a separate entity, many people still love them such as Banner’s girlfriend Betty Ross, Black Widow, his friend Rick Jones, his niece She-Hulk, Hiro-Kala and Skaar, as well as the founders of the Avengers. However, his uncontrollable power causes him to fight his fellow superheroes and other characters on occasion.
Although there are many changes to Hulk’s skin color, the most published one is his green color. As the Hulk, Banner has incredible strength on par with his anger level. Powerful emotions like anger, terror and grief generally trigger Banner’s mutation into Hulk. Also, the most common plot in their story is that Banner and Hulk always fight the police or armed forces due to all the wrecks they have caused. HULK SMASH!

4. Hellboy
Hellboy is an ugly-looking superhero who’s literally a spawn from hell. The origin of his life went all the way to 1944 during World War II when the Nazi were looking for a way to conquer the world by combining science and black magic to open the portal that could release a giant monster: Ogdru, one of the most terrifying monsters from hell who’s known as one of the seven gods of death and is sealed in an indestructible crystal.
Grigori Rasputin, a magician who defected from Russia and Ilsa Haupstein, a Nazi member both held a ritual by spreading some books across the site in order to revive Rasputin. Meanwhile, a number of American troops along with Professor Broom observed the ritual that was about to begin as the portal machine for the ritual began to open. At that moment, American troops bombarded with grenades and the battle against the Nazi troops ensued.
However, even with the Nazi’s defeat, the ritual was not a complete failure as a baby monster from hell came out. The baby then became Hellboy and was raised by the Americans to this day. True to the name, Hellboy looks really like a devil with the exception of his horns that were cut away so that they won’t grow.
Despite the name, Hellboy is a very kind person who helps people from the threats of other demonic figures and many people fall in love with him, including the Russian witch Baba Yaga who takes interest in Hellboy. Additionally, he also has a lot of exciting tales about his journey and daily activities.
5. Deadpool
Many people consider Deadpool as an Anti-Hero, but he is still one of superheroes with some ugly appearance. Originally named Wade Winston Wilson, he is a fictional anti-hero who first came out in The New Mutants #98 comics made by Fabian Nicieza and writer Rob Liefeld in February 1991.
At first, he appeared in The New Mutant as a supervillain and then in the X-Force, but later on he became an anti-hero. Deadpool is a crippled and mentally unstable mercenary with extremely quick health regeneration and powerful physical strength. He’s known as the “Merc with Mouth” due to his talkative behavior and tendency to break the fourth wall and speak with the readers/viewers as he realizes he’s a comic character.
While some people consider him very similar to the devil Freddy Krueger due to his face, Deadpool is still loved by his girlfriend who loves him for who he is.
