What makes Tokyo Revengers unique is the science fiction element with the time travel or Time Leap that Takemichi Hanagaki can do. Although the origin of this supernatural skill has not been disclosed, as Ken Wakui, the author of Tokyo Manji, still purposely kept it a secret 

Unlike time travel in Doraemon, Takemichi Hanagaki's Time Leap in Tokyo Revengers has quite complicated rules and restrictions. But that's what makes the Butterfly Effects even more interesting. 1. Can only Travel to the Same Date and Month 

Takemichi Hanagaki's first time travels by accident when he falls onto the tracks and nearly gets hit by a train. Instead of being hit by a train, Takemichi actually traveled from 2017 to 2005 with the same date and month. Turning into teenage Takemichi but retaining the knowledge from the future.

During the course of the story, Takemichi always time travels to the same date and month. Naoto's conclusion also helps Takemichi determine the strategy needed to change the future.

2. The Maximum Time Leap Distance is 12 Years 

Takemichi Hanagaki's maximum time leap distance was immediately noticed during his first time leap. In 2017, Takemichi was pushed by Akkun onto the train rail and almost got hit by a train but instead, he traveled to 12 years ago during his middle school days with Akkun and his friends.

After helping Naoto Tachibana who was supposed to be killed by a delinquent, Takemichi also tries to change past to prevent the future assassination of Hinata Tachibana by Tokyo Manji. That motivation is what makes Takemichi time travel 12 years into the future by shaking Naoto's hand. The rules for the maximum year traveled then changed when Mikey was able to make Takemichi do a time leap as well.

3. Unpreventable Character Death in Takemichi’s Time Travel 

Initially, Draken was supposed to die on August 3, 2005, but Takemichi came to help him so Draken lived as an adult in the future. Draken's death could have been prevented because it happened in the past before Takemichi can time travel.

It’s different from the deaths of Baji Keisuke, Emma Sano, and Kisaki Tetta which occurred during Takemichi's time leap. The permanent death status of these characters occurs due to Takemichi's presence during the events. Since they died in the past which Takemichi time-traveled to, they can’t be saved.

4. Time Leap Happens When Takemichi Shake Hands with People with the Same Goal

To time travel, Takemichi Hanagaki had to shake hands with Naoto Tachibana. They have the same goal of preventing Hinata Tachibana’s death who was killed in different ways in 2017.

After the death of Kisaki Tetta, Hinata Tachibana's life is no longer in danger in the future. This makes it impossible for Takemichi to travel back to the past by shaking Naoto’s hand because their goal has been achieved and Takemichi and Naoto no longer share the same goal.

Takemichi is able to travel back in time when he shakes hands with Mikey who asks to be saved. That means that Takemichi's time travel can only happen when he shook hands with people who share the same goal as him.

5. Takemichi is Not the Only One Noticing the Change, But Also the Person He Shook Hand With

In other time-traveling stories, the change in the future cannot be realized by others, only the time traveler knows it. In Tokyo Revengers, Naoto Tachibana also realizes that something has changed in 2017 even before Takemichi returned from his mission in 2005. 

Naoto reveals this phenomenon to Takemichi when he returns to 2017 after changing the past to save Hina's life. When Mikey shook Takemichi’s hand, Mikey felt Takemichi had returned even though he had not met in the past.

6. Can Return to the Future By Shaking Hands with the Person Who Triggered the Time Leap

After Takemichi's time leap from 2017 to 2005 through his handshake with Naoto, he has to shake hands with Naoto again to return to his real timeline. Intentionally or unintentionally, Takemichi's 2005 handshake could send him back to 2017.

When Takemichi returns to the past because he shakes hands with Mikey in the future, he has to shake hands with Mikey to return to his real timeline.
