The excitement of the Thousand Year Blood Wars arc, which adapts the continuation of the Bleach manga story into its newest anime series, also features Renji Abarai as one of the prominent shinigami figures. The hit animated series adapted from Tite Kubo's manga Bleach is a Shounen anime starring Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who turns into a Soul Reaper or Shinigami. His originally ordinary life takes a turn when he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper assigned to his hometown, and Ichigo then meets several more Soul Reapers, such as Byakuya Kuchiki and Renji Abarai.

So, what is there to know about Renji? This red-haired Soul Reaper is Byakuya's vice-captain. He made his debut appearance in the series Bleach as Ichigo's nemesis, but soon, the two teamed up to save Rukia, defeating Sosuke Aizen. Curious about the figure of Renji Abarai who will later become Rukia's companion. Here are 6 things Bleach fans should know about Renji Abarai.

1. He Is The First Bleach Character To Show Shikai

Renji Abarai

Zabimaru is Renji Abarai's shikai. Shikai is the first stage of a Zanpakuto power up. As soon as Renji said "Roar, Zabimaru!", his sword instantly lengthened and had several bladed sections that could function like whips. With his shikai, Renji could easily use it against enemies like Exequias.

Zabimaru also had the honor of being the first shikai to be featured in the Bleach series, when Renji used him to challenge Ichigo at the end of the anime's first season. Ichigo had met Rukia, of course, but he was in no condition to use the Sode no Shirayuki which became Rukia's shikai. In contrast, Renji was the first to show the shikai to the viewers of the Bleach series.

2. He's not as good as Rukia at controlling Kido

Renji Abarai

A Shinigami or Soul Reaper relies heavily on their zanpakuto in battle, especially when they can activate shikai or even bankai. But don't forget that they can do kido, a magic system among Soul Reapers. Some kido spells are meant to hold back enemies or heal their allies, and some kido can do damage.

Rukia, Kisuke Urahara, and Byakuya are the most proficient kido users we've seen so far. Even though Renji Abarai could use it too, he was a second-rate player. The firepower was decent, just like Szayelaporro, but Renji couldn't control it very well. In fact, his academy instructor once made a fuss over this because Renji's use of kido was judged to be very reckless. Even so Renji's kido is still useful if used occasionally.

3. He is a good fighting partner

Renji Abarai becomes Ichigo's friend after they both agree that they both need to save Rukia, rather than just upholding Soul Society's laws. By the time Aizen reveals himself to be a villain, Renji stands ready to help, and he and Ichigo fight well together. They don't beat Aizen, but in that moment Renji shows how great he is at being Ichigo's teammate.

Renji shows us how great he is to be a battle partner for the second time against Szayelaporro Grantz. Once Uryu joined the battle, he and Renji played to their strengths and dealt a serious blow to their Espada enemy.

4. He Has A Very Close Relationship With Zabimaru

A baboon with a snake-shaped tail is a manifestation of Zabimaru, Renji's zanpakuto. After Renji loses to Ichigo, he reassesses the relationship he has with his weapon.

Actually, zanpakuto can think for themselves, and they actually act more like battle partners. This Zanpakuto restrained Kenpachi for a long time, considering how he didn't even know Nozarashi's name, but Renji and Zabimaru's relationship was very close. Later, when fighting the Sternritter, Renji unlocks the next level of his zanpakuto through their close partnership, and can help him defeat the all-powerful Sternritter.

5. He Really Likes Exercising

Renji Abarai is not only known as a good Soul Reaper and a tough guy, but he is also very fond of sports. Exercise is a great way to get in shape and show one's competitive spirit.

Renji, formed a futsal team consisting of five people. Futsal is a variant of indoor football on a smaller field, and players need to emphasize creativity, technique and improvisation to play this sport.

6. He Changed Units Several Times

We know Renji Abarai as a member of Squad 6, serving under Captain Byakuya Kuchiki. But he didn't start to become a Shinigami from there. After graduating from his academy, Renji is assigned to Squad 5 led by Captain Aizen, along with Momo and Izuru.

It happened because Aizen thought that these three Shinigami were quite troublesome, and Aizen kept them close so he could monitor the three of them. However, later Renji was transferred to the quite formidable Squad 11, and he got several tattoos on his forehead from Squad 11. From there, he eventually moved to his current position in Squad 6.
