Hataraku Saibou or Cell at Works! is an anime adapted from a manga written and illustrated by Akane Shimizu. The series features anthropomorphized cells from the human body, with the two main protagonists being the frequently featured Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell.

The story of Hataraku Saibou takes place inside the human body, where trillions of anthropomorphic cells perform their duties to maintain a healthy body. Who are the characters in Cells at Work!? Here’s the list of the 6 characters in Hataraku Saibou

1. White Blood Cell U-1146

The main character in Hataraku Saibou is White Blood Cell, specifically the type of Neutrophil U-1146 that works under the Neutrophil Division. Together with his fellow neutrophils, he is assigned to patrol around the Blood Vessels and eliminate invading Foreign Substances such as Germs and Viruses.

White Blood Cell U-1146 is a somewhat introverted Cell and aloof. Like other White Blood Cells, his personality changes drastically in battle by becoming much more aggressive and brutal as he struggles to eliminate the invading Germs. Despite his cold and ruthless appearance, he is actually very kind and selfless and willing to risk his life to protect his fellow cells.

He managed to maintain good relations with the other cells and he didn't seem to judge them based on their rank or type. Even though his job requires him to kill Germs that attack mercilessly, he is still able to empathize with his enemies. Such as respecting the infected cell that he had to kill and even willing to listen to Cancer Cell's last words before ending his life.

He may accidentally become a comedian as well. Like when he's killing germs, White Blood Cell divides his attention to greet Red Blood Cell and even give advice to his trainees, while still eradicating germs.

2. Red Blood Cell AE3803

The next character in Hataraku Saibou is a new Red Blood Cell who still feels unfamiliar with blood vessels, so she often gets lost when delivering goods. Its main job is to deliver oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nutrients throughout the body like other Red Blood Cells.

AE3803 is a Red Blood Cell that has absolutely no direction and results in frequent delays in its delivery tasks. Despite this, she is devoted to her work and works hard to be as reliable as her colleagues, though still often gets lost on her way. When talking to others, she is cheerful and always willing to offer help to those who need it.

She is also very sorry for all the mistakes she made. She is timid, and does not dare to attack germs or even other cells. However, when the going gets tough, the AE3803 works relentlessly and becomes more determined than ever to get the job done. She would continue to advance even when she faced a state of complete exhaustion.

3. Platelet 

The adorable character in Hataraku Saibou named Platelet is a type of blood cell that works under the Platelet Division. Together with other Platelets, she is responsible for reconstructing the condition of the injury and forming blood clots in the body.

She is usually accompanied by Platelet Boy, and Platelet Girl who appears to assist her in all her tasks. She knows how to make things work together and is admired by Backwards-Chan too. Her innocent and humble character made her liked by other cells. She loves the attention he gets from the AE3803.

4. Killer T Cell

Killer T Cell is a supporting character in Hataraku Saibou. Killer T Cells are White Blood Cells, specifically Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (Cytotoxic T Cells) that work under the Killer T Division. It is tasked with killing foreign entities and damaged or infected cells. It becomes a Memory T Cell when fighting the same antigen, for example a Cancer Cell.

Killer T Cells are violent, obnoxious, and quick-tempered, resulting in competition with many other cells. He also hates when a non-white blood cell forms a friendship or relationship with one of the cells of this type.

5. Helper T Cell

Next is a type of White Blood Cell, specifically T Lymphocytes or called Helper T Cells. His job is to plan strategies to deal with invaders or foreign substances and assist other White Blood Cells in the immunological process. He is the main commander of the Killer T Division.

Helper T Cell is seen as a genius, although there are often pieces of candy stuck to his face. He seems to have a rivalry with Killer T Cell since he and Killer T are still Naive T Cells.

6. Macrophage

This motherly woman in Hataraku Saibou is a White Blood Cell type, especially as a Macrophage or Monocyte. Outside of the bloodstream, she plays the role of Macrophage. It kills foreign substances such as Bacteria and Viruses and conveys information from them. She also works as a cleaner, therefore, it cleans dead bacteria or viruses as well as dead or dying cells.

In the bloodstream, she turns into monocytes. She is able to transmigrate and also kill any threat with gusto. In the bone marrow, erythroblasts gather around macrophages. They differentiate for young erythroblasts similar to how a teacher educates his pupils.

Macrophages play a variety of roles in the body, from kindergarten teachers to professional assassins. Therefore, she has many faces and personalities. In general, Macrophages are friendly and easygoing cells that manifest as a soft-spoken mother figure. However, she could also brutally kill intruders without showing any empathy or compassion.
