Hetalia: Axis Powers recently caught the anime communities off-guard by releasing Southeast Asia nations as their newest characters in the long-running anime and manga series, including an Indonesian character. Fans immediately fall in love with the official character illustration and flood the internet with fanarts and cosplays of said Hetalia Allies character.

Originally a Japanese-language webcomic, Hetalia then became an anime and manga series created by Hidekaz Himaruya. The series follows the story of politics, histories and cultures of the countries during World War II, of which the majority of countries are personified in their respective character. All the main characters are countries from either the Axis or Allies group, and their amusing personalities and interesting storyline motivates the viewers to further study the history of World War II.

The Hetalia Allies characters group in particular consists of the United States of America, Great Britain (also known as England), France, Russia and China. All of the characters portraying their respective nations are such a dork that they mostly fail in reaching a consensus during most of their meetings. Other countries who eventually joined the Allies like Canada also have their own crowning moments. Of all these Hetalia Allies characters, here are some who will definitely motivate you to study the history of World War II.

1. United States of America (Alfred F. Jones/America)

Alfred F. Jones represents the United States of America in Hetalia. He is voiced by Japanese seiyuu Konishi Katsuyuki and English dubber Eric Vale.

America is both hyperactive and stubborn, but he also possesses a strong leadership and adventurer instinct, all while being the man with a strong sense of justice. At first, Sweedish and Finland found him as a child, but then he became the main target of England and France after Finland leaked his whereabouts. America became England’s step-brother, but then rebelled and became independent from England once he grew up. He has a sibling that is Canada, who is known to be soft and shy, a contrast to America’s bold and brash personalities.

America is the leader of the Hetalia Allies characters group (despite everyone’s protests) that consists of himself, England, France, Russia and China. With his slogan being “I am the hero!,” he often proposes some ridiculous ideas and ignores other countries’ opinions which makes him difficult to solve international problems. He always makes fun of England who befriends the fairies and ghosts of his country, but he himself has an alien friend called Tony, and his boss is an alien as well.

Funnily enough, America is afraid of ghosts. In the manga, America explains to England that his fear toward ghosts stems from the fact that he can’t hurt them physically. In addition, America seems to symbolize the typical American stereotypes as he loves munching hamburgers and drinking Cola.

2. England (Arthur Kirkland/Igirisu)

Arthur Kirkland represents England in Hetalia and is also known as Great Britain, UK or Britain. He is voiced by Japanese seiyuu Noriaki Sugiyama and English dubber Scott Freeman.

Hetalia Allies character England is depicted as a sensitive man with thick and huge five-line eyebrows. Once a pirate, he is now a cynical man with a sharp tongue. Some of his iconic traits include his bad cooking skill, him being bad with alcoholic drinks, his tendency to swear, his supernatural sights and his habit of cursing his opponents.

He is a rival to France to an extreme degree where one time they both rent an island just so that they both can fight. England also has mixed feelings toward America who was once his step-brother. Apart from his eyebrows, he also spots a punk-styled blonde hair, green eyes and wears his green Kingdom Artillery’s uniform.

In the English version of Hetalia anime, there was an argument about why they chose to name him “Britain” instead of “England,” to which Funimation responded that it was requested by the studio in Japan. Tokyopop, Hetalia manga’s English publisher, refers to England more than other names. On one strip, England declares that he has a sibling named Scotland, to which Himaruya confirms that England represents both Great Britain and England while Scotland, North Ireland and Wales are his siblings.

Another Hetalia Allies characters “related” to England is Sealand, a micro country who has long been considered England’s annoying little brother because of his relentless attempts to propose his country’s independence in front of the other nations.

3. France (Francis Bonnefoy/Furansu)

Francis Bonnefoy represents France in Hetalia, who is voiced by Japanese seiyuu Masaya Onosaka and English dubber J. Michael Tatum.

France is a very romantic and cheerful Hetalia Allies character. In the series, he seems to have an everlasting rivalry with England. As a nod to the French stereotypes, France tends to do romantic things to the other nations like considering French language as the language of love and sexually harassing other nations, including England. However, he is rather shocked by the notion of forcing unrequited love to other people.

France tends to consider his military defeat as a joke from God as well as being the older brother of the European nations despite calling Spain his “older brother.” However, he gets pretty mad when other countries call him an “old man” and claims that he is young at heart and appearance. He wears a long, blue cloak with a capelet on top of it and red pants, brown shoes, and a belt that he wears on top of his cloak.

France really detests England and always makes fun of the latter’s cooking skill or argues with him. He loves bringing roses everywhere he goes, either as an ornament he holds on his hand or as a cover when he’s naked.

4. Russia (Ivan Braginski/Roshia)

Ivan Braginski represents Russia in Hetalia, voiced by Japanese seiyuu Yasuhiro Takato and English dubber Jerry Jewell.

Russia is a rather tall person who seems to be innocent and sweet at first, but is actually a psychopath due to all the tenses surrounding his bloody history. Russia is a large country in North Europe but he detests the winter season in his country. Despite that, he is great when taking advantage of the climate during the war. He admires vodka and sunflowers who only bloom in a warm environment.

Despite his brutality toward other nations, he has good intentions and wishes to live with everyone in a warm environment surrounded by sunflowers. Other countries fear him, especially Baltic countries (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia). Russia has two female siblings: Ukraine, his kind yet temperamental older sister and Belarus, his young sister whom he’s really afraid of. He becomes depressed when thinking about his sisters since Ukraine left him behind to find a friend in the European Union while Belarus is obsessed with marrying him. Despite the shortcomings, Russia cares for his sisters.

Russia loves his catchphrase, “Everything will unite under Russia” as well as “Kolkolkolkol,” the latter being his onomatopoeia when he’s angry. Russia is usually seen with his “miraculos and painful metallic pipe” (possibly a gas pipe, a reference to Russia’s monopoly in exporting energy to the European countries including Poland). In the manga, he is shown taking Germany’s water pipe and is surprised by the notion of accessible water. Poland isn’t afraid of him thanks to the territorial conflict that became a part of history that these two share together.

5. China (Yao Wang/Chugoku)

Yao Wang represents China in Hetalia, voiced by Japanese seiyuu Yuki Kaida and English dubber Clarine Harp.

China is one of the oldest countries in Hetalia at over four millennia old (making him the oldest surviving member in the series). He is even depicted as being one step closer toward immortality, as written on Hetalia’s character introduction. Because of that, he is always considered the oldest brother among the East Asia countries. China has friendship with Russia but he tends to get scared by the notion that Russia is following him 24/7, even at his own house. This makes him uncomfortable and often pushes Russia away, representing the separation of China-Soviet Republic after World War II.

China has great interest toward cute items like the Hello Kitty doll and even brags about that gift from Japan to his boss. He always ends his sentence with “-aru” or “-ahen (means opium), the latter only when speaking to England as a nod to the Opium Wars.

During the wars between the Axis and Allies, China always faces Germany and Japan with a wok and vegetable spoon, as if portraying the Chinese stereotypes that Chinese always serve some amazing dishes. He loves cooking and is very noisy when talking about food.

China’s boss is depicted as an intimidating green dragon, but is actually very laid back and tolerant as he gets annoyed by China rather often through funny means. China is sometimes shown to talk to a panda. He has a lot of “vacation spots” in Chinatowns all over the world.

6. Canada (Matthew Williams/Canada)

Matthew Williams represents Canada in Hetalia and has the same voice actors as America.

Despite being a part of the Hetalia Allies characters group, every other nation seems to forget about his existence. Even a polar bear called Kumajiro whom he always carries also tends to forget about him and asks “Who are you?” to Canada. Though to be fair, Canada also forgets about his own polar bear and often misnamed him as Kumachika.

However, once the other Hetalia characters start to notice Canada’s presence, he is often mistaken as his twin brother that is America and people hate him for that. To set himself apart from America, he draws a maple leaf on his forehead and America slaps the Stars and Stripes flag on his forehead as well.

And those are the Hetalia Allies characters, all of which are hilarious and motivating you to study history lessons. Between six of them, which one is your favorite?
