Since its inception, fans have been anticipating the new Fatal Frame game, a survival horror series which pioneers in its scary and near-defenseless elements with only an old obscura camera being the staple item in the series. Additionally, it is also known as a beautiful horror game due to its depiction of traditional Japanese horror culture and the beautiful characters.

So far, there have been many titles under the umbrella of this beautiful and aesthetically pleasing survival horror series developed by KOEI TECMO. With beautiful female characters starring all of its titles, fans really look forward to their actions and grace against the ancient ghosts. But of all the female casts, who are the most notable characters in the Fatal Frame series? Here are six of them!

1. Miku Hinasaki

Miku Hinasaki appears in the first Fatal Frame game to look for her older brother, Mafuyu Hinasaki who has gone missing in a haunted mansion called Himuro Mansion. Despite being declared as missing by her journalist team, Editor Ogata as well as her colleagues when covering the mansion, Miku musters up enough courage to venture the terrifying building and witness a glimpse of her sister from afar.

And after being trapped in Himuro Mansion for a couple of nights, Miku finds herself chasing after her brother who comes and goes in every corner of the rooms. Little by little, she also uncovers the secret of Himuro Mansion that was once a location where a sacrificial ritual took place, with Kirie being the victim of the ritual when her neck, arms and legs were tied up to become a human seal that blocked the gate of hell beneath Himuro Mansion. Because Kirie’s ghost loves Mafuyu, Miku’s brother is seemingly trapped forever in Himuro Mansion.

Miku returns as a playable character in Fatal Frame 3 due to her haunting curiosity toward her missing brother as she has nightmares about her brother every night. This leads to her return to yet another adventure in search of her sister while getting rid of evil spirits.

But in Fatal Frame’s latest title, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, it’s Miku who disappears in Hikamiyama mountain. Her daughter Miyu Hinasaki becomes the new protagonist who searches for her mother’s whereabouts.

2. Mio Amakura

Mio Amakura is Mayu Amakura’s older twin sister and the protagonist of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. With a relatively small and cute posture, she’s going to motivate you as you venture to a sacred village where Mio and Mayu are trapped. One day, the Amakura twins were having a picnic on a hill as they both promised to look after one and the other forever. On the way home, they got trapped in a haunted village where a horrifying ritual was taking place.

From there on, Mio and Mayu must survive their fate of becoming the twins who frequently become the sacrifices for the village’s ritual where the twins need to choke one and the other until one of them dies first, and the surviving girl must die by being thrown to a deep hole near the ritual site.

The latest victims of the ritual, Sae and Yae became a pair of ghosts who then massacred the entire villagers. The whole village is now filled with ghosts who chase after Mio and Mayu in order to force them to reenact the Crimson Butterfly ritual.

3. Rei Kurosawa

The third title, Fatal Frame: The Tormented features an entirely different kind of female protagonist: Rei Kurosawa, a tall mature woman with short hair who’s beautiful and very mature. After a traffic accident caused by Rei’s carelessness led to the death of his boyfriend Yuu, Rei became haunted by nightmares. And like a curse, the nightmares continue every night and leave a tattoo-like scar on Rei’s body whenever she wakes up.

Yuu’s presence in Rei’s dream doesn’t help, as he always appears to haunt her. Rei then ventures in her dream to appease Yuu’s soul and uncover the sacrificial ritual Sleeping Priestess which killed Reika Kuze.

Reika’s ghost, full of tattoos, always chases after Rei in her dream to the point of appearing in Rei’s house in real life. As such, Rei must put an end to this nightmare curse before the whole tattoo wounds engulf her body as well.

4. Ruka Minazuki

After starring Japanese female protagonists in most of their titles, Fatal Frame Mask of The Lunar Eclipse features the elegant mixed-race Ruka Minazuki who was once a victim of kidnapping in Rougetsu island as a child. She lost her memories after being rescued, but then she returns to the island after two of the five other kidnapping victims there mysteriously passed away.

After arriving on the island, Ruka notices the place becomes very quiet after the entire villagers mysteriously died shortly after Ruka and her friends escaped the island. Misaki Asou and Madoka Tsukimori, who were also the victims of the kidnapping, traveled through the island before Ruka came with the same intention as her.

Even Detective Chou, who was responsible for saving the girls in the kidnapping case, has to return to the island to uncover the truth. As it turns out, the island always becomes a sadistic ritual site during every lunar eclipse. A woman who becomes the sacrifice for the ritual has to dance to her death while wearing the mask that’s nailed on her face. Ruka then has to struggle against the leader of the cult who performs the ritual for her future’s sake and to set all the wandering souls in the island free.

5. Yuri Kozukata

The latest female protagonist in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is indeed quite alluring. Additionally, Yuri Kozukata has a peculiar ability to see the past of a soul she touches and call forth the soul from the netherworld.

Owner of an antique shop, Kurosawa asks Yuri to look for the missing people at Mount Hikamiyama due to her special ability. However, the mountain is haunted due to the infamous horrifying rituals there, including the ghost marriage.

During her adventure in Mount Hikamiyama, Yuri’s whole body gets wet and it scares her so much as it affects her psyche when facing the spirits around the mountain. Not only must she keep her clothes dry to reduce the stress, but she also needs to keep her clothes from looking to erotic.

6. Ayane

KOEI TECMO really loves featuring their characters from their own series into their other games, as Ayane from Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden and Warriors Orochi becomes a playable character in a bonus episode in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water.

The purple-haired ninja has a mission in Mount Hikamiyama to search for the missing Tsumugi Katashina. And unlike the other Fatal Frame female protagonists, she really is the toughest of them all due to being an elegant Shinobi.
