Time travel is an interesting concept to be made into a story, especially in the form of anime. In fact, time travel anime have always been very popular among the community even before the 21th century for providing unique storyline about living in a different era and inevitably causing Butterfly Effects which alter the course of the history.
While time travel anime are quite common here and there, there are seven among them that are worth watching during your free time. While the ongoing and popular Tokyo Revengers is an obvious choice, the other anime on this list are just as exciting and engaging to watch!
1. Tokyo Revengers
One of the most hyped anime currently available happens to be a time travel anime called Tokyo Revengers. Its story begins as an unemployed Takemichi in 2017 sees the TV news about his ex-girlfriend Hinata Tachibana being found killed during a gang war involving the Tokyo Manji group. Shocked after seeing the news, Takemichi becomes lost in thought as he waits for the train in the station and falls down on the railway where a running train is about to crash onto him.
Unexpectedly, instead of dying to the crash, Takemichi finds himself back to his junior high school time in 2005 and meets the younger Hinata back when they were still dating. Takemichi decides to avert the Tokyo Manji group from being the evil organization they are about to become in 2017 and avoid Hinata’s death.
This popular time travel anime is highly anticipated among the anime community every week due to the intricate storyline which involves the Butterfly Effects as well as the good ol’ bareknuckle fistfights akin to the Crows Zero.
2. Gintama
Gintama may not be a full-fledged time travel anime, this hilarious comedy anime with bizarre plots manages to create an epic time travel anime with its second anime movie titled “Gintama Last Chapter.”
The movie tells the tale of Sakata Gintoki who meets a man with a camera head called Tama Time Machine after being scolded for attempting to record a movie in the cinema. Tama then takes Gintoki to a graveyard in the future where the latter has passed away.
Gintoki then investigates the altered future due to his death. His Yorozuya group has split up and Kagura has grown up to become an elegant yet wild lady who fights her enemies left and right.
On the other hand, Shinpachi who becomes braver than before has started to be well-respected among the people, and Okita who was once the member of Shinsengumi has become Hitokiri Okita with similar appearance to Samurai X’s Kenshin Himura and similar reputation as well, dubbed as Battousai the Killer.
But that’s not all. A horrifying pandemic is also happening in the future, and Gintoki rushes against the clock to uncover the cause of the pandemic so that the lady Otae doesn’t die from the pandemic. Along the way, he discovers some horrifying facts about the origin of the pandemic and decides to travel back to the past when a massive war between the samurai and the invasion of Alien Amanto was occurring.
3. Kimi no Na wa
Once very popular in the cinema, this emotional time travel anime offers intriguing plots with Makoto Shinkai’s trademarks of breathtaking visual design and immersive sound effects and soundtracks.
Marketed internationally as “Your Name,” Kimi no Na Wa depicts the love story of Taki and Mitsuha who are separated by a distant timeline. Both characters’ fate intertwined during that one time they both meet each other on a train. But suddenly, Taki and Mitsuha swap bodies and live as the other person. They have to adjust to their new life as Taki who’s in Mitsuha’s body gets used to the life at a local village while Mitsuha who’s in Taki’s body lives in a metropolitan city.
However, it turns out Mitsuha has actually passed away in the era where Taki lives due to the meteor strike that befalls her village. Taki constantly swaps places with Mitsuha and travels back to the past to save the villagers from the catastrophe. And that, without a doubt, makes Kimi no Na wa the most romantic time travel anime that has ever gone viral.

4. Inuyasha
Inuyasha is perhaps one of the most memorable time travel anime that still has plenty of loyal followings, depicting the tales of a highschool girl called Kagome Higurashi who travels back to the past during the Japanese civil war through the Bone-Eating Well behind her house. Kagome who at first doubts the old tales then begins to believe the stories as well as her family’s magical heirlooms.
Back to the past, Kagome is attacked by the villagers for being perceived as a demon, but then Grandma Kaede comes to rescue her and convince the villagers that the young girl is the reincarnation of Kikyo, a woman with the power to seal the demons. Kagome who is believed to have a similar power to Kikyo then opens the arrow that seals the canine demon Inuyasha and travels around the world with him to find Shikon no Tama.
One funny thing about Inuyasha is that despite being a time travel anime, Kagome is still able to use her cell phone back in the old days when neither internet signal nor electricity existed yet.
5. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
As if becoming a cult classic among the dedicated anime community, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu still has loyal followings as a time travel anime with extremely unique story and presentation. Suzumiya Haruhi is a not-so-average highschool student who unknowingly has the power of an omnipotent Goddess who can grant everything she wants.
Haruhi who’s also known as the most tsundere time travel anime character then creates the SOS Brigade club at her school that has the time traveler Mikuru Asahina, an alien called Yuki Nagato and an Esper called Itsuki Koizumi as the members. Kyon is the only average human being who somehow befriends Haruhi, even though Haruhi insists she only hangs out with quirky people.
In all honesty, this time travel anime has a very unique plot and presentation, perhaps a bit too much to the point of being annoying for some people yet still loved by many others. The most bizarre example is the anime’s season 2 story where Haruhi really enjoys her summer vacation and wishes for it to never end. This inexplicably causes a time loop where the entire world experiences the same summer vacation days over and over and over again, throughout the majority of the season. In fact, the only different thing between each episode is the clothing that the characters wear during the entire time loop.
This phenomenon is called Endless Eight which both anger the audience and amaze them with this time travel anime’s brilliant idea. Fortunately, Kyon realizes this abnormality and discusses with Yuki Nagato about the bizarre time loop that has been happening for many times.
6. Time Quest
“Dem bidip bidip fly fly… Magic Kettle!” If you grew up in the 90s you’d most likely remember this catchphrase along with a time machine with the shape of a funny kettle with sunglasses. Time Quest or Time Travel Tondekeman! is a classic comedy time travel anime full of nostalgia and adventures.
Time Quest tells the tale of two kids called Hayato Shindou and Yumi Arama who are both trapped in the past era of the Arab country, and they can’t go back to their present era because their bizarre magic kettle called Tonkedeman falls to the hand of Abdullah, a bandit who has always wanted to kidnap the kingdom’s princess named Princess Shalala.
Her beloved Prince Dandan intends to rescue the princess by teaming up with Hayato and Yumi along with Aladdin and his Genie to chase after Abdullah. Amidst their attempt to reclaim Tondekeman and rescue Princess Shalala, they all get caught in many messy and bizarre adventures across generations and timelines, as this time travel anime depicts a different era and place whenever they chase after Abdullah.
7. Doraemon
It is sacrilegious to have a list of time travel anime without mentioning Doraemon, one of the most recognized anime titles in the world. Doraemon depicts the tales of a robot cat named Doraemon and a child named Sewashi from the 22th century who are traveling back to the past and arriving in the year 1969 to help his great grandfather Nobita Nobi’s elementary student self.
This time travel anime is mostly known for its time traveling method through the time machine stored in the drawer of Nobita’s desk. Additionally, Nobita is notorious for being lazy and a crybaby, and he is always assisted by many futuristic tools from Doraemon’s magical pocket to solve his problems, even though they generally cause even bigger mayhem instead.
Doraemon and Nobita, along with his friends Shizuka, Giant and Suneo adventure across time and space with the help of the time machine. With memorable and relatable characters and exciting tales, Doraemon is considered by the community as the most successful time travel anime to ever exist.
