1. The Development

Luffy learns Gear Fourth during his two-year training in Ruskaina, the island with 48 seasons. The wild animals on the island force Luffy to use Gear FOurth to surpass them. This technique is proven strong and intimidate the wild animals.

As time passes, Luffy’s use of Gear Fourth significantly develops. This is perfect since Luffy is up against dangerous foes like Doflaming, Katakuri, or Kaido.

2. Gear Fourth’s Mechanic

Every Gear Luffy Master is a result of training Gomu Gomu no Mi. When using Gear Fourth, Luffy took advantage of his elasticity and compression. After blowing winds to his muscles, Luffy compresses his power with Busoshoku Haki.

By significantly increasing his elasticity, his speed and power also increase. According to Silvers Rayleigh, this is an effective way to face an enemy. The other advantage of this technique is that Luffy can fly using the Gear Fourth.

3. Gear Fourth’s Tattoo

Using Busoshoku Haki for a long duration makes the tattoo appear on Luffy when he is using Gear Fourth. This tattoo marks that Luffy’s body is still a rubber even though it is enhanced with Busoshoku Haki.

4. Luffy’s Height

Using Gear Fourth also affects Luffy’s height. Pre-time skip, Luffy’s height is 1,72 meters. Post-time skips his height is 1,74 meters. This shows that using Gear Fourth doesn’t affect Luffy’s natural growth, but the technique does increase Luffy’s size.

5. The Downside of Gear Fourth

Luffy’s Gear Fourth significantly increases his speed and power, but on the other side, the technique has a disadvantage. Luffy’s attack reach is reduced when he is in the Boundman form. Fortunately, Luffy solves this problem with his other form, the Snakeman. In the Snakeman form, Luffy’s body can stretch even more.

6. Gear Fourth’s Color

For those who only read the manga will not know the color of Luffy’s Gear Fourth. In the anime, Oda colors Luffy arms and leg black with a shade of red.

7. Gear Fourth’s Inspiration

According to One Piece SBS volume 79, Oda explains that Gear Fourth is inspired by the guardian of Buddha known as the Nio Statue. The reason being Luffy intends to protect everything that’s important to him, just like the Buddha.
