Anime & Manga | 13 January
Erwin Smith is one of the most influential characters in Attack on Titan mainly due to his intelligence. But aside from being an astute commander, this character has some fascinating facts that you probably didn’t know.
On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to discuss several facts about Attack on Titan’s Erwin Smith. Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1. He Was a Bright Kid
Upon knowing that the people inside the Walls had no records or memories about life before the Walls were built, Erwin knew that something was off – even though he was just a kid. His father later shared a theory on how the people had their memories altered by the Eldian King, a theory that was proven to hold some truths later on.
Unfortunately, Erwin got his father killed by sharing this theory with others. Erwin grew up becoming the most intelligent character in Attack on Titan, who can only be rivaled by others like Hange or Armin Arlert.
2. His Childhood Nickname Was “Eyebrow"
One of Erwin Smith’s distinguishable characteristics was his thick eyebrows. Isayama once revealed that Erwin’s childhood nickname was “Eyebrow.” It’s not a flattering nickname to have, but at least his subordinates had never called him by his nickname.
3. The First Commander to Take Over the Post from a Living Incumbent
The Survey Corps has a long history of losing its members. Usually, a Commander of the Survey Corps takes the role after the previous one died in battle. However, Erwin was the first to take over the post even though the predecessor, Keith Shadis, was still alive.
Due to Keith’s guilt and shame of his incompetence, he stepped down from the role as the commander of the Survey Corps and decided to train the recruits. Considering Erwin was one of the most respected soldiers, he was understandably appointed for the role.
4. Has a Song Dedicated to Him
Attack on Titan has featured some emotional music in the series, and some of the fan-favorites are actually the theme songs of certain characters. It’s been confirmed that eight characters in the series have their own theme songs, including Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Reiner, Bertholdt, Jean, Levi, and Erwin.
Erwin’s “theme song” is called “Hope of Mankind”, which is sung by the character’s voice actor, Ono Daisuke. The title of the song actually suits Erwin perfectly as he was the representation of hope for the future of humanity.

5. Actually Felt Guilt for the Death of His Soldiers
Erwin was known for being ruthless in his efforts of eradicating the Titans, and he even sacrificed his soldiers multiple times to achieve his goals. Even in the direst situations, Erwin would demand his soldiers to give their hearts and souls for the cause – and he didn’t exclude himself from this approach in battles. Meaning that he was willing to die for his goals.
Despite his cold, emotionless expressions in the face of certain death, Erwin actually felt guilt for indirectly killing his own troops. He was aware that it took a lot of lives to achieve his ambitions.
6. His Friendship with Levi Didn’t Have a Smooth Start
Levi Ackerman is one of Erwin’s most esteemed and reliable soldiers. And the show has shown how both have a strong bond with one another. Levi wasn’t afraid to tell Erwin the truth even though he was his superior.
In Levi’s spin-off, No Regrets, it’s told that both didn’t always have such a strong friendship. As a matter of fact, Erwin initially forced Levi to join the Survey Corps to make up for his crimes, and Levi despised him for that. After years of working together, both of them developed a respect for one another.
7. Losing His Right Arm Made Erwin Unable to Make a Proper Salute
Since Erwin has shown his willingness to sacrifice his life against Titans, it’s not surprising that he has lost so many things in battles. Erwin lost his right arm as he tried to save Eren from Reiner and Bertholdt.
With no right arm, Erwin couldn’t make a proper salute. Given that the members of Paradis military salute using their right arms, Erwin was forced to make salutes with his left arm.
