Free Fire and PUBG Mobile are the two most popular Mobile Battle-Royale titles in the world that have been competing against each other since their releases. Most people deem the two as not comparable since they both target two different markets: PUBG Mobile targets higher-spec devices, while Free Fire aims for lower-spec devices. However, in 2019, Tencent Games released a light version of PUBG Mobile to compete with Free Fire, namely PUBG Mobile Lite. So, what are the differences between Free Fire and PUBG Mobile Lite? Here’s the list!
1. Realism
Although it’s lighter than PUBG Mobile, it doesn’t necessarily mean that PUBG Mobile Lite is just a “watered down” version of PUBG Mobile. PUBG Mobile Lite offers the same experience you get from PUBG Mobile. The gunfire sound effects in PUBG Mobile Lite sounds more realistic than Free Fire. In terms of graphics, PUBG Mobile Lite has a realistic look, while Free Fire looks more animated.
2. Game Engine
PUBG Mobile Lite maintains the characteristics of PUBG Mobile by using Unreal Engine 4. Unreal Engine 4 is often used in several demanding games on PC and consoles, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Valorant, and Ark: Survival Evolved.
On the other hand, Free Fire had to spare its graphics in order to provide higher fps by using the Unity Engine. Some popular games, such as Fall Guys: Knockout Battle, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Honkai Impact 3rd also use this engine.
3. Battle-Royale Maps
At the moment, Free Fire has 3 maps for its Battle-Royale: Bermuda, Purgatory, and Kalahari. While PUBG Mobile Lite has 2 maps: Varenga and Golden Woods. On the other hand, PUBG Mobile Lite’s maps are significantly smaller (2x2 km) than Free Fire’s (4x4 km), so the maps in PUBG Mobile Lite offer more frequent and intense battles.
Albeit PUBG Mobile Lite is, to put it simply, a lighter version of PUBG Mobile, you won’t be able to find the maps from PUBG Mobile in PUBG Mobile Lite. Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Vikendi, and Karakin are all replaced by the much smaller Varenga and Golden Woods.
4. Total Downloads
Both Free Fire and PUBG Mobile are hugely popular Mobile Battle-Royale games in the world. As of September 2020, Free Fire has been downloaded for more than 500 million times on Google Play Store, while PUBG Mobile Lite has amassed a total of 100 million downloads. PUBG Mobile Lite racked up a smaller amount of total downloads since it has only been released in August 2019, 2 years after Free Fire. The players who prefer PUBG Mobile to PUBG Mobile Lite also split the number of total downloads for these games.

5. Specifications
As we’re already aware of, PUBG Mobile Lite targets gamers who use “potato” devices who want to experience PUBG Mobile. So, the specifications for PUBG Mobile Lite are certainly much lower than PUBG Mobile’s and not too different from Free Fire. Unfortunately, PUBG Mobile Lite is not yet available on iOS at the moment.
Free Fire minimum requirements

6. File Size
Due to its simple graphics, which are perfect for potato devices, you only need a relatively small storage space to download Free Fire, which is around 580 MB. However, is Free Fire file size actually bigger than PUBG Mobile Lite?
The answer is yes. As it turns out, PUBG Mobile Lite’s file size is a bit smaller than Free Fire’s, 556 MB. It’s probably because PUBG Mobile Lite is still relatively new with not as many updates as Free Fire. On the other hand, the original title, PUBG Mobile, quadrupled the file size, 1.93 GB.
7. Players Per Match
Free Fire and PUBG Mobile Lite prioritize the Battle-Royale mode compared to other game modes. The Battle-Royale mode in PUBG Mobile can accommodate a maximum of 100 players, PUBG Mobile Lite can only accommodate up to 60 players. While Free Fire can only accommodate a maximum of 50 players.
With relatively fewer players than other mobile Battle-Royales, Free Fire and PUBG Mobile Lite have a shorter playtime on average than PUBG Mobile, which is around 15 minutes.
8. Characters
Free Fire is known for having dozens of characters with various skills and looks. On the other hand, PUBG Mobile Lite adopts the same principles as PUBG Mobile by not using any character feature. You can personalize your default character in PUBG Mobile Lite with the custom outfit feature.
Well, those were the 8 glaring differences between Free Fire and PUBG Mobile Lite. Those of you who use a potato device, these are the games for you!
