Anime adaptations of mangas, games, or light novels, aren’t always well-made. According to Dunia Games, there are some bad anime adaptations that actually ruined their respective franchises and hurt the reputation of the series.
So, what are the worst anime adaptations that ended up as disappointments according to fans of the original works? Without further ado, let’s get into it.
1. Bleach
Bleach, an adaptation of Tite Kubo's original manga has garnered high praise and even managed to set the standard for future mangakas to follow, inspiring the likes of Gege Akutami with Jujutsu Kaisen and Koyaharu Gotouge with his Demon Slayer.
Studio Pierrot successfully made the first two seasons of its anime adaptation. After that, the studio continued to make fillers that were too long until the anime ended in 2012.
Fans have been wondering whether the final arc will get an anime adaptation. And after a long wait, fans can finally see the continuation of Bleach in 2022.
2. One Punch Man Season 2
With the first season debuted in 2015, One-Punch Man took the anime world by storm, thanks to Madhouse's incredible animation. A second season has been confirmed, but then J.C.Staff was announced to be taking over the animation duties. Unfortunately, that is the beginning of all problems.
Saitama's return was watchable but compared to its predecessors, it's sorely lacking. To make matters worse, some fans felt that the superhuman satire Saitama fell flat as the direction of the sequel was unclear.
3. Nanatsu no Taizai Season 3
For its first two seasons, Nanatsu no Taizai was an excellent adaptation of the hugely popular manga. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the remaining series after the anime was submitted to Studio DEEN.
DEEN's handling of Nanatsu no Taizai has been pretty bad. After seeing the long-awaited third season, fans were appalled as their beloved characters seem to be brought back to life with deformed eyes, disproportionate bodies, and an overall lack of symmetry.
4. Tokyo Ghoul Season 2
Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re by Sui Ishida are considered one of the mangas that manga enthusiasts must read. A modern dark fantasy with a nightmarish theme and a well-characterized ensemble, Tokyo Ghoul managed to create an interesting and entertaining story for manga fans to enjoy.
After Pierrot took the anime adaptation as its project, Tokyo Ghoul suffered from the same problem as other adaptations from this studio: the series was full of fillers that had nothing to do with the original story.
5. God Eater
Based on the JRPG of the same name, God Eater initially seemed like an easy sell for gamers and anime fans alike. The titular God Eater's journey across a post-apocalyptic world was brought to anime by Ufotable, the studio behind Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works.
However, during the development of God Eater, it seemed like Ufotable was focusing on Fate/Stay Night as the animation quality of God Eater seemed lacking and the schedule was unclear.
Because of this, most fans of the game were very disappointed with this adaptation.
6. Deadman Wonderland
Concept-wise, Deadman Wonderland was a seemingly promising edgy blockbuster anime. Released during the peak of the death game anime series, Ganta's journey in a carnival of killings was very interesting for anime fans.
Unfortunately, Deadman Wonderland, which crammed 21 chapters of its manga into 12 episodes, felt really rushed. The character development was poor, and the focus was on action/fight scenes despite the fact that it's supposed to be a horror series.
7. Ao no Exorcist Season 2
Ao no Exorcist added some anime-exclusive storylines to compensate for the lack of material to adapt from the ongoing manga.
That didn't really bother fans, though some were hoping it would become a proper adaptation of the manga. Their wishes were granted in the second season, but they came with consequences.
Season 2 kicked off with the Impure King Arc, which recovered almost half of Season 1. Unfortunately, this wasn't done smoothly, so the previous anime-exclusive story development and progress were suddenly erased.
This certainly left fans confused with the Ao no Exorcist plot.

8. D.Gray-Man Hallow
Despite the 103 episodes in its first season, the second season of D.Gray-Man was far from satisfying. D.Gray-man Hallow only has 13 episodes that don’t even tell the full story of the original series.
9. Berserk (2016)
Studio 4C initially planned to make a series of Berserk movies with the popular The Golden Age Arc as the first adaptation.
However, the movies didn’t earn enough, which caused the series to be transferred to TV and a new studio. All of that eventually led to a terrible show, even considered by many as one of the worst anime adaptations of all time.
Even if you can ignore the horrible CGI animation, Berserk (2016) has a plotline that feels rushed by combining characters or events from different arcs into a 24-episode adaptation.
10. The Promised Neverland Season 2
Following the massive success of the first season, The Promised Neverland had become one of the best anime adaptations for many fans. In contrast, its second season killed not only the hype of the series but also the entire franchise.
The worst thing about The Promised Neverland Season 2 is that it crammed almost 100 chapters of the manga into 11 episodes, which made the story feel way too rushed.
To make matters worse, Season 2 missed out on all the important arcs, including those that introduce important characters and world-building.
The good reputation of The Promised Neverland has changed ever since — many anime fans detest this anime for its unclear plot.
