Who would’ve thought that the popular ongoing anime Tokyo Revengers about the delinquent gang Tokyo Manji has a team with an Indonesian anime creator working behind the scenes? Considering the popularity of the anime around the world, being able to work on this project alone is already an achievement for that Indonesian animator as well as the country.
And as it turns out, it’s not only Tokyo Revengers that has an Indonesian animator working on the international-scale project. There are plenty of other local animators that have gone international in their journey to animate some of the big titles in the world. Let’s get to know those six Indonesian animators right here!
1. Aswin Nur Cahya
Aswin Nur Cahya is an Indonesian animator whose role becomes pretty notable as a part of the Tokyo Revengers animation team, as his name appeared in the credit scene of Tokyo Revengers episode seven and eight. Currently, he works at Color & Smile Studio.
Born in Jepara, the 26-year-old Aswin is a graduate from State Vocational School 2 Jepara. During the time he studied there, Aswin studied animation but wasn’t too interested in anime. It was during his time in Diponegoro University studying for diploma 3 Japanese Literature where he began taking interest in anime and aiming to study anime directly in Japan.
Aswin’s once-in-a-lifetime chance would appear in 2016 through the Job Training Institution program to study and work in Japan as he managed to travel to Japan. He then spent a year and half studying Japanese language in Nippon Academy in Gunma.
After that, Aswin studied for diploma 3 in JAM Nihon Anime Manga Senmon Genko anime school in Niigata where he learned many things about creating anime, and graduated in two years.
During his study at the anime school, the institute advised the students to study while applying for an animation job in an anime studio as a part of the study. That’s where Aswin began his career as a legit animator to the point where he was entrusted to work on Tokyo Revengers.
At first, Aswin felt working on anime was hard due to the high level of attention to details like working on characters with tattoos on their body, such as Draken which could take half an hour to work on. However, as time goes on, he gets used to the pressure and demand for the attention to details.
The more frames and details to work on, the longer it’s going to take to finish the job, as Aswin takes between dozens of minutes to hours to work on every scene. However, with the complete result in his Tokyo Revengers episodes being highly received, every Indonesian Tokyo Revengers fan can experience Aswin’s hard work. Considering the popularity of the anime as well as Aswin’s achievement as an Indonesian animator who has gone international, let’s hope they’re going to motivate Indonesian youths to carry on the legacy and bring the nation on an international level.
2. Christiawan Lie
Apart from the new Indonesian anime creators like Aswin, there are also veteran Indonesian animators who have gone international for years like Christiawan Lie or Chris Lie. His name rings a bell in the world of animation as he has participated in a number of Hollywood movies like Transformers 3, GI: Joe, Spiderman, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

In 2003, Chris Lie received a scholarship from Fulbright and continued studying for his Master degree in Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD). This was the start of Chris’ career as he chose Sequential Art for his subject of choice.
Devil’s Due Publishing, a publisher company holding the license for the GI: Joe comic in Chicago entrusted Chris Lie to work on several projects. He then continued to work on several renown movies until he finally returned to Indonesia and became the owner of Caravan Studio, all while still being entrusted to work on projects from marvel, Hasbro, Mattel, Lego and Sony Online Entertainment. He truly has a very outstanding array of achievements as an Indonesian animator.
3. Ronny Gani
Anime fans and Marvel fans who love the Avengers movies must be familiar with Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. or even Chris Hemsworth, but it seems only a handful of them are aware of the name Ronny Gani. After graduating, Griselda began working at DreamWorks Animation where she took part in many movies like Shrek Forever After, Puss in Boots, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Home. She really showed her dedication in the Moana movie where she worked on the character design and costume as the visual development artist, and she made the correct decision to set the movie in the Pacific ocean where Indonesia lies.
6. Michael Reynold Tagore
And last but not least is Michael Reynold Tagore, born in Surabaya on May 24 1979 who is one of the animators behind the success of The Hobbit and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Several other involvements Michael took part in were in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 as the shader/texture. He also took part in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in 2014, both times as the Texture Artist.
Previously, Michael worked in 2013 several movies like Iron Man 3 as the Digital Effects Crew, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug as the Texture Artist as well as The Wolverine (2013) as the Modeler/Texture. And in 2011, Michael also took part in Happy Feet Two as the Surfacing Artist. Needless to say, he has no shortage of achievements on his resume.
Michael is a graduate from Tarumanegara University on Graphic Designer major and a postgraduate diploma from the University Technology of Sydney. Like Chris Lie, Michael has been in love with drawing since he was a child. Starting from senior high school, he moved to Jakarta and began making animation for games as he became interested in the world of 3D animation after watching the Lord of the Ring movie. His dream came true after working on the series spin-off, The Hobbit.
These are currently the six Indonesian anime creators who have worked on international projects. May they become the motivations for the younger local animators in their journey toward the international career.
