Not all anime adaptations are based on manga. Here are some successful anime adaptations of popular light novels.

Successful anime adaptations aren’t always based on an already popular manga series or even original concepts from the creator. There are also lots of successful anime adaptations of light novels that offer diverse, varying kinds of plots and storylines. Due to the increasing popularity of light novels, numerous anime studios decided to adapt some light novels into anime series. 1. The Monogatari Series

The Monogatari anime series is one of the best anime adaptations of light novels available for you to enjoy. Adapted from the light novel of the same title written by Nisio Isin, illustrated by Vofan, Shaft took charge of the production of the Monogatari anime series. This anime revolves around Araragi Koyomi, a 3rd grade high school student who, during the holiday season, experiences various strange occurrences after he encounters a legendary vampire. The incident leads Araragi into becoming a half-vampire and learns about the existence of something called 'Kai' or spirits. With his new life, and assisted by Oshino as his savior who is also a Shikigami or spirits, Araragi starts helping people who have problems with 'Kai'.

2. Durarara!!

Produced by Brain's Base, this anime centers around the downtown district of Tokyo, Ikebukuro. The story, which was adapted from a light novel from Japan written by Ryohgo Narita, was illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda, which was later adapted into a Japanese anime series. Durarara!! follows a teenager named Ryuugamine Mikado, who is looking for a new life in the city of Ikebukuro. In that city, he wants to study with his best friend Kida Masaomi at Raira Academy.

Even though Ryuugamine really enjoys his life in the city of Ikebukuro compared to his life in the village, his best friend Kida always warns him to be wary and not get close to people from the Black Rider group, a gangster group that is home to ruthless people. But Ryuugamine's life actually has something to do with that group in the city of Ikebukuro. The anime adaptation attracts fans' interest with conflicts, and mysteries that keep the audience curious.

3. Violet Evergarden

This debut work of Akatsuki Kana won the grand prize at the 5th Kyoto Animation Awards, which eventually led to the development of a highly-regarded anime. This collection of stories from light novels follows a female character named Violet Evergarden, who used to be a weapon of war. After returning from the war, Violet leaves the military world and tries to start a new life and learn about human emotions through the art of writing letters.

Even though Violet has her own bitter and traumatized memories, she never gives up learning about human emotions for the sake of her superior, Major Gilbert, who passed away during the war. Violet spends much of her life working as one of the Dolls who write emotional letters at the CH Postal Service in order to understand human feelings. It is here that Violet comes face to face with various kinds of human emotions and learns what true love is.

4. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Despite only having been adapted into an anime in 2021, Shōsetsuka ni Narō’s light novel has been around since 2012 and was published in a book in 2013. The anime adaptation, which was done by Studio Bind, is of the isekai, action, and drama genres. It tells the story of an unknown 34-year-old man in Japan who’s kicked out of his family home following the passing of his parents. He’s also no longer in school, nor does he have a job. 

As he laments about his life, feeling useless about his existence, he encourages himself to be more useful for others. He jumps into an oncoming truck, in order to save a person from being ran over, sacrificing himself in the process. Once he’s awake, he realizes that he’s been reincarnated as a baby in a magical world. After his failures in his past life, he’s determined to be a better person in his new life.

5. Toradora!

Written by Yuyuko Takemiya and illustrated by Yasu, this anime series is based on a light novel released in 2006 and finished in 2009, published by ASCII Media Works. The anime ran from October 2008 to March 2009. The story begins with the protagonist, Ryuji Takasu, who’s frustrated in his second year of high school. Despite his gentle personality, he feels desperate about his chance of having a girlfriend.

At school, Ryuji is excited to find out that he’s in the same class with his best friend Yusaku and his crush, Minori Kushieda. However, he’s also in the same class with the most ruthless girl at school, Taiga Aisaka. If you’re into melodramatic teenage stories with some stunning illustrations, you definitely need to check out this anime.

6. Fate/Zero

An anime adaptation of a popular light novel of the same title, Fate/Zero was written by Gen Urobuchi and illustrated by Takashi Takeuchi. This action-fantasy anime tells about the supernatural Holy Grail that possesses the power of granting wishes. The Holy Grail chooses seven people who will be put in a tournament, to compete between themselves in a holy war. Yet the holy war actually triggers the three battles from the past, thus, it’s so difficult to determine who’s going to be the winner. Interestingly, those who are chosen by the Holy Grail, are also ordered to choose their knights or servants to fight for them. These servants come from the past, and are summoned by the artifacts left by respective heroes. The 7 servants were actual heroes who manifest as Saber, Lancer, Archer, Assassin, Caster, Raider, and Berserker.

7. Spice & Wolf

Another anime adaptation of a popular light novel, Spice & Wolf proves that the fantasy-action genre still manages to attract fans. The story revolves around Kraft Lawrence, who goes from town to town as a traveling merchant with his carriage and his merchandise he can get his hands on. One day, Kraft encounters a Wolf deity named Holo, who’s willing to help him farm and haggle to get profits in his journey.
