Anime series are usually based on various sources, from manga, light novels, games, and even visual novels. While most anime series are based on their manga versions, not all of them are from Japanese manga series as some of them are based on popular Korean manhwa.
For those of you who aren’t aware, manhwa is a term used to refer to Korean comic books. With the increasing popularity of these manhwa series, there are growing numbers of anime adaptations based on popular manhwa series. 1. Tower of God
Also known as Kami no Tou, Tower of God is an anime adaptation of Lee Jong Hwi’s (S.I.U) manhwa, which began in April 2020. This series follows Baam, a young man who’s trapped in a tower with his childhood friend Rachel.
One day, Rachel decides to go to the mysterious tower known as the 'Tower of God', and she never returns. Eventually, Baam musters up his courage and enters the tower to find Rachel. Since then Baam’s journey begins as he meets various kinds of people with different kinds of goals of climbing the tower. This series has become one of the most popular series on Crunchyroll.
2. The God of High School
Aired since July 2020, this series is produced by MAPPA, the studio that brought us numerous popular anime series like Jujutsu Kaisen and Attack on Titan. So, the visuals in this series are undoubtedly stunning. MAPPA does a great job in making The God of High School a perfect mix of animation, music, and a compelling plot.
This anime series follows a boy named Mori Jin, a 17-year-old martial artist from Seoul, South Korea. He receives an invitation to compete in The God of High School tournament. The tournament is sponsored by a shady company that brings high school students from all around South Korea to take part in the qualifiers. As the main prize, the winner will have their wishes granted by the company.

3. Noblesse
Written by Son Jae Ho and Lee Kwang Soo as the illustrator, Noblesse began airing in October 2020. This series follows a powerful vampire from the Noble race named Cadis Etrama Di Raizel (also known as Rai) who just woke up from his 820-year-long sleep without knowing about mankind’s development.
He woke up in an abandoned building, trying to adapt to modern life. He starts living a new life as an ordinary high school student at Ye Ran High. And that’s where he meets Shin Woo and Yu Na. Rai begins a dangerous journey when a secret organization finds out about his past.
4. Timing
This series follows four different characters that possess different powers. This thriller series will keep you engrossed with its story. It is set in a mysterious location where numerous oddities occur. This series will invite you to unravel the mystery behind a series of suicide cases at a high school in Seoul.
Park Ja Gi, a high school teacher who possesses the supernatural power of foresight, dreams about a deadly incident where people commit suicide by jumping from the school rooftop. Ja Gi tries to stop this mass suicide along with Kim Yeong Tak, a student who can stop time, Kang Min Hyeok, who can turn back time, and Jang Se Yun who can predict any event 10 minutes before it occurs.
5. Blade of the Phantom Master
This series is based on Korean mythology and folklore, which is quite refreshing as there aren’t many anime series with this setting. It follows a warrior named Munsu, whose life is saved by Mon Ryon, a young man who aspires to become a secret agent for Jushin, a once-great nation that was recently destroyed.
Mon Ryon’s main goal is to save his girlfriend, a warrior who’s held captive by the evil Lord Byonand. However, he dies fulfilling his goal, and Munsu saves Chunhyan. After that, both of them continue Mon Ryon’s honorable goal of returning Jushin to its former glory.
6. Kurokami: The Animation
The 2009 anime is an adaptation of the popular Japanese-Korean manhwa collaboration. Although it’s not entirely Korean-made, the anime still has its roots in Korean manhwa. It follows Keita Ibuki, who tries to unravel the secrets behind the Mototsumitama conflict and the Doppeliner system that are related to his mother’s demise.
7. Freezing
Created by Lim Dal Young and illustrated by Kim Kwang Hyun, the Japanese-Korean manhwa collaboration is set in a futuristic world, where planet earth is under siege by creatures from another dimension, known as the Novas. The series tells the story of a boy named Kazuya Aoi, who enrolls for training at a special academy with the Pandoras, genetically-modified girls trained to fight the aliens. While the young men are called the Limiters, who are given special powers called Freezing to limit the opponents’ mobility.
