The Ball is My Friend
The Captain Tsubasa series tells the story of Tsubasa Oozora, an 11-year-old elementary school student who loves soccer very much, and dreams that one day he will win the FIFA World Cup for the Japanese national team. He lives with his mother in Japan, while his father is a ship captain who travels the world.
Tsubasa is known as Soccer no Moshigo, which translates to "soccer boy sent to heaven". When he was only one year old, he was almost hit by a bus while walking while playing ball. However, the impact of the bus was restrained by the ball in front of his body, which saved his life as the ball provided cushion for the impact he received.
Hence Tsubasa's motto is "The ball is my friend." Since then Tsubasa has always gone anywhere by playing with his football ball. His mother deduces that in reality, Tsubasa was indeed born to play football. At a very young age, Tsubasa already has extraordinary speed, stamina, dribbling abilities, and the ability to kick the ball. Tsubasa amazed everyone who saw him playing football.
At the beginning of the story, Tsubasa and his mother move to Nankatsu, a fictional city in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan which is famous for its talented elementary school football team. It was in that city that Tsubasa met Ryo Ishizaki, a young student who loves football. Tsubasa also meets Sanae Nakazawa aka Anego, a young girl who also likes football and often helps cheer up the Nankatsu team. Tsubasa also gets acquainted with Genzo Wakabayashi, a talented goalkeeper who he immediately challenges to compete at the annual Nankatsu sports festival.
Tsubasa also meets Roberto Hongo, one of the best Brazilian soccer players in the world who is a friend of Tsubasa's father. After that Roberto started living with Tsubasa and his mother to train Tsubasa to play football. Roberto becomes Tsubasa's mentor and helps him put his soccer skills to good use, and convinces him to join Nankatsu Elementary School and their elementary school football team, which Roberto also coaches while passing down his soccer techniques to Tsubasa.
Tsubasa also meets Taro Misaki, who has made a series of trips through several regions of Japan due to his father's job changing residences. Misaki immediately joined Nankatsu. The two become good friends on the field and in everyday life, forming a Duo that will soon be known as the "Golden Duo" or "Dynamic Duo" Nankatsu.
When Tsubasa and his Nankatsu team begin to face the best of elementary school football, he meets talented players such as Kojiro Hyuga, Ken Wakashimazu, Jun Misugi, Hikaru Matsuyama, and many others. The Nankatsu Tsubasa team won several national championships at the youth level and won the U-17 World Championship to make Japan proud. After that Tsubasa left Japan to play in a club in Brazil.
Come See All, Our Captain is Coming
The Captain Tsubasa anime is adapted from a Japanese manga series, originally created by Yoichi Takahashi in 1981. The series revolves around the sport of soccer and focuses on Tsubasa Oozora. The series is characterized as a dynamic and engaging football story, although often the scenes don't make much sense. The plot of the story focuses on Tsubasa's relationship with his friends, rivalry with his opponents, training, competition, action, and the outcome of each soccer match.
Through several Captain Tsubasa manga, the plot shows the development of the character Tsubasa and his friends each time they face new rivals. Takahashi decided to serialize the manga because it was inspired by the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina.
The manga series was originally published in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump comics magazine between 1981 and 1988, spanning a total of 37 tankoubon volumes. This series was followed by several sequels. Captain Tsubasa and its sequels have sold more than 80 million copies worldwide, making them one of the best-selling manga series.
The Captain Tsubasa manga was adapted into an anime series, produced by Tsuchida Production. The first season premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo between October 1983 and March 1986. After that many Captain Tsubasa films and anime series appeared, with the latest anime series airing between April 2018 and April 2019.
