Shaman War! This cool anime about the shaman tournament that was popular in the 2000s returns in 2021 with a remake and also airs on Netflix. The remake is warmly welcomed by its loyal fans and makes Shaman King 2021 worthy of being mentioned in the Dunia Games rubric called Anime of The Week.
Shaman King 2021, which was worked on by director Jouji Furuta, makes you nostalgic with the battles between the shamans using spirits of the dead. Shaman King 2021 is a better presentation than the classic version of Shaman King. Here’s the review of Shaman King 2021, a remake of the popular shaman tournament anime.
About a Shaman Tournament Joined by Shamans Around the World
Shaman King 2021 tells the story of a shaman, an extraordinary person with the ability to communicate with ghosts, spirits, and gods, which is not seen by ordinary people. The Shaman Fight is a prestigious tournament that gathers various Shamans from all over the world to fight against each other.
The Shaman Fight tournament is held once every five hundred years, where the winner is crowned the Shaman King. The title allows its owner to summon a "Great Spirit" and shape the world as they see fit.
The story opens when a mother from the famous Shaman family of the Asakura Clan is about to give birth to her twins, but the first born son is taken by the Fire Spirit. The boy's father and grandfather who were the greatest Shamans were unable to stop the Fire Spirit from kidnapping the baby. The only way to stop them is to raise and train the other twins so he can become Shaman kings and stop them.
Twelve years later, Manta Oyamada, an ordinary high school student, takes a shortcut through the cemetery to attend his night lessons. But unfortunately, Manta was confronted by a group of thugs at the cemetery. Manta is helped by a strange child who likes to stay alone in the cemetery to mingle with spirits.
The boy introduced himself as Yoh Asakura, a Shaman in training. Yoh then demonstrates his power by teaming up with a six hundred year old samurai ghost named Amidamaru to save Manta.
Yoh wants to befriend Manta because of his ability to see spirits, and with the help of Amidamaru, they work together to achieve Yoh's goal of becoming the next Shaman King. They are accompanied by Anna, Yoh's fiancé who aspires to marry a Shaman King.

The Remake Only Has One Season, Ends at the Start of Shaman Fight
Shaman King 2021 is adapted from a manga titled Shaman King by Hiroyuki Takei. The manga consists of 35 volumes, which originally appeared in the weekly magazine Weekly Shounen Jump in 1998 but discontinued in 2004. The Shaman King manga was later completed by the author in 2009 with a more appropriate ending.
Many fans were disappointed by the first ending, where the villain is the victor over everything instead of the protagonist. Perhaps this is the reason why the manga was reissued in 2009 with a revised ending.
A total of 64 Episodes of the classic version of the Shaman King anime by studio Xebec aired in Japan from 2001 to 2002. One Indonesian private TV station once broadcast the classic Shaman King anime around 2003, but not until its end. However, it’s enough to make many Indonesians love Shaman King.
The Opening and Ending music which was dubbed into Indonesian was also very memorable. So Shaman King 2021 can be nostalgic for many Indonesians.
On June 12, 2020, Kodansha as the licensee of Shaman King for the first time announced a new adaptation or remake of Shaman King. This remake contains stories from the 35 volumes of the manga, which Kodansha began republishing on June 17, 2020.
Many fans hope that the disappointing ending of the first version before it was revised doesn't happen in Shaman King 2021. The remake features better visual effects and cooler character designs, which makes Shaman King fans really enjoy the anime. So far, Shaman King 2021 has 13 episodes in its first season, which stops right before the Shaman Fight tournament starts.
The Original Seiyuu Returns in the Remake
Masafumi Mima, who worked on the classic version of the Shaman King anime, is back in Shaman King 2021. In the seiyuu or dubber (voice) lineup, only Yoh Asakura's voice was recast, with Yoko Hikasa appointed to voice the main character. The other characters use the original voice actor of the classic Shaman King.
Who doesn't know Yoko Hikasa, the famous seiyuu who voices Mikasa from Attack on Titan and Mio from K-On? She is the voice of Yoh Asakura, the main protagonist in Shaman King 2021. Katsuyuki Konishi, the popular voice actor who voices the USA in Hetalia, voices Amidamaru, a samurai spirit who protects Yoh Asakura.
Megumi Hayashibara, a legendary voice actor who is featured in many old anime is back in Shaman King 2021 as Anna Kyoyama, the protagonist's fiancé who is an Itako or traditional Shaman from the Izumo region. Hayashibara sung the opening theme for this anime, just like the classic Shaman King when she performed the song Oversoul.
That’s all for Shaman King 2021, a remake of the popular shaman tournament. Do you think the remake will be as loved as the classic? Which one is cooler, the classic or the remake? Share your answer in the comment section!
