If you’re a MOBA fan, chances are, you’re already familiar with the terms, such as Carry, flank, last hit, gank, counter, etc. However, in the mobile MOBA scene, especially Mobile Legends, a particular term, "poke" has gained popularity, yet it has a different meaning in this game. So, what does “poke” mean in Mobile Legends?
The General Definition of “Poke” in Most MOBA Games
In most MOBA games, poke means to nudge the opponent. In this case, “poke” refers to the action of gradually shredding down the target’s health using abilities.
Usually, heroes that work amazing in poking tend to have low cooldown skills and skillshots -- abilities that require players to aim manually from a distance by predicting the target’s movement, for example, Guinevere's Energy Wave (1).
The Use of Poke in MOBA Games
During the laning phase, a poke is useful to exert pressure on the opponents so that you can dominate the lane. With the continuous damage, the opponents will have a difficult time and tend to play more passively.
In team fights, poking does a great contribution in slowly shredding down the targets’ health. So, before the team fight even occurs, your targets won’t be in full health, giving your team an edge over the opponents.

So, Does “Poke” Have a Different Meaning in Mobile Legends?
If you’re a Mythic player in Mobile Legends, surely you’ve heard of the point system you see after winning the game. Now, in Indonesia, the term "poke" in this game is an abbreviation of "poin kecil" (small point).
It’s unclear when and how it became a term, but many players in the Mobile Legends community use poke to refer to it -- it’s usually used to tease players who suffer a terrible performance in the game.
For example, if your friend or opponent doesn’t play well, you tease them by writing “poke” in the chat. Although the more popular term for this is "noob", yet most Mobile Legends in Indonesia uses “poke” to tease other players who played badly.
So, what do you think is the best definition of “poke”? Do you use it to refer to gradually shredding down the target’s health or to point out players who played badly? Let us know in the comments below!
