Those of you who watch Arcane must already be familiar with what happened to Vander. The key figure of Zaun died when he’s trying to stop Silco. Vander’s death was caused by the Shimmer created by Silco in Arcane Act I.

What is Shimmer?

In Arcane, Shimmer is a serum developed by Silco and his scientist, Singed. Because of the injustice and disparity between the upper (Piltover) and undercity (Zaun), Silco plans to bring terror to the upper city while also making them give Zaun the respect it deserves.

In his effort, Silco and Singed set up a lab to develop Shimmer. Shimmer can be used in various ways, such as by smearing it on the skin, via injection, or by drinking it. The human who consumes it gains superhuman traits, making them stronger and faster -- suitable for anyone to build an army of superhumans.

The sheer power it offers also comes with detrimental side effects. Humans who consume Shimmer will be addicted to the substance and has some changes to their physical appearance.

In Act II, you can see several citizens of Zaun suffer some abnormalities to their physiques that look cancerous. This is one of the detrimental side effects of consuming Shimmer. On top of that, they will feel sluggish if they haven’t consumed Shimmer for a certain time.

What is Shimmer Made of?

In the past, Singed was Viktor’s friend. This can be seen in Arcane Act II. Viktor encountered Singed in a hidden grotto. In the cave, we saw that Singed was taking care of his huge salamander friend named Rio. And, just like Shimmer, Rio also has a purple glow.

During the encounter, Singed tells Viktor that Rio is dying and in dire need of help. And, that’s what prompted Singed to do whatever it takes to save Rio. He certainly had a good intention, yet he chose to take unethical methods. We can see that Rio’s condition gradually deteriorates as it has to be put in a large glass tube.

Rio’s deteriorating condition has led to a theory that says Singed used it as the main ingredient for Shimmer. That’s also probably why Singed doesn’t want Rio to die.

The First Human Test Subject for Shimmer

After a long trial, Silco and Singed managed to develop Shimmer. The first test was conducted on a lab mouse. Shortly after consuming the serum, the tiny mouse grew bigger and became ferocious -- attacking the cat that was trying to corner it. Due to this success, Silco urged for a human subject.

Deckard, one of Silco’s underlings, failed his mission and was captured in the lab. Taking advantage of the situation, Silco used Deckard as his first human test subject. The result? A great surge of power went through Deckard’s body. However, Deckard was clearly exhausted after his transformation. His energy was greatly depleted during the process, leaving him unable to stand up.
