Arknights' story centers on the lives of Oripathy-infected individuals, with a mobile medical company called Rhodes Island offering help and sanctuary to those who are often shunned by society due to their condition.

Rhodes Island must also face challenges from the Reunion Movement, a terrorist organization that commits acts of violence against the oppressive government of Oripathy-infected people.

Arknights' development studios, Studio Montagne and Hypergryph, released the game in China in May 2019. Later, Yostar launched the game globally in January 2020. The game's success has inspired several animated promotional videos since 2019, and even released a nine-minute "Holy Knight Light" animated short video in December 2021 to commemorate the game's first anniversary.
