Synopsis
Before we delve deeper into the definition of “látom”, let’s discuss the premise of the series. Fire Force is set in a world where the strange phenomenon, Spontaneous Human Combustion happens; a bizarre phenomenon that has plagued humanity for years, randomly transforming people into mindless, ruthless flaming creatures called Infernals.
But, there are also pyrokinetics -- people who are gifted with the ability to manipulate and control flames without having to transform into an Infernal. As an effort to stop the threat posed by the Infernals, the pyrokinetics formed a special unit called the Special Fire Force.
Shinra Kusakabe is an enthusiastic third-generation pyrokinetic, nicknamed Devil’s Footprints for his ability to ignite his feet at will. As a member of the Special Fire Force Company 8, Shinra upholds the brigade’s duty to extinguish the Infernals and lead the spirits to their peaceful rest.

What Does “Látom” Mean?

Many fans speculate that “látom” is also used to mean “I see your light”, confirming the pain that the spirit within the creature has to endure, given that in Fire Force, Infernals are deemed to sustain unbelievable pain.
Some even believe that látom can also be interpreted as RIP (Rest In Peace) as the word often used after a pyrokinetic extinguishes an Infernal.
According to CBR, látom can be interpreted in many ways, as shown in the anime series. The first example is the sister, Iris, who says látom when she and the others break protocol in front of a lieutenant. A second example is when a mascot says látom to bid good luck. While other interpretations of the word also indicate that the word can be used to express one’s wish or even irony.
Whereas in Hungarian/Magyar, látom literally means “I see it” or “So be it”, and is often used to end a prayer.
