Some may argue that being a weeb isn't complete if you don't listen to Japanese Pop songs, or commonly abbreviated as JPOP. This year, there are quite a number of JPOP artists with catchy songs — some of them are the soundtracks of popular anime series.
On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the most popular JPOP artists that can be a reference for those of you who are just new to Japanese pop music. Without further ado, let's get into it.
1. YOASOBI
YOASOBI is a Japanese musical duo formed by Sony Music Entertainment Japan that consists of a Vocaloid producer Ayase, and singer and songwriter Lilas Ikuta. With the slogan “novel into music,” the duo has released songs based on the novels posted on monogatary.com.
After going viral on social media, YOASOBI's 2019 debut single titled Yoru ni Kakeru gave them a breakthrough by reaching the top of the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks.
2. LiSA
Who doesn't know LiSA? For those of you who have been a fan of anime for a long time, surely you have at least heard a song from LiSA at least once.
She began her musical career as a vocalist for the indie band Chucky. Following Chucky's disbandment in 2008, LiSA moved to Tokyo to pursue a solo career, making her major debut in 2010 for the anime Angel Beats as one of two vocalists for the fictional band, Girls Dead Monster.
3. Aimer
Aimer (エメ, Eme) is a Japanese pop singer and lyricist signed to SACRA MUSIC and managed by agehasprings. Her name derives from the French verb "Aimer", which means "to love". Aimer uses the name aimerrhythm for her lyric credits.
Debuting in 2011, she has released six studio albums, all of which made it into the top 20 of the Oricon Albums Chart. Her 2021 song "Zankyosanka" became her first song to reach the top of the Japan Hot 100 chart, selling 87,649 downloads in its first week. It also ranked 37 on the Billboard Global 200.
Aimer has provided soundtracks for popular anime such as Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Fate/stay Night Unlimited Blade Works, and Kimetsu no Yaiba.
4. Yorushika
Yorushika (ヨルシカ) is a Japanese rock duo founded in 2017 from Universal Music Japan. The group consists of N-buna, a vocaloid music producer, and Suis, a female vocalist.
They are known for their juxtaposition of "passionate" and "upbeat" production and instrumentation fused with heavier lyrical content, which often explores ideas such as love and human emotion and draws from literary works including Masuji Ibuse and Jules Verne.
The name "Yorushika" is taken from the lyrics in their song "Kumo to Yūrei" (雲と幽霊): "Yoru shika mō nemurezu ni" (夜しかもう眠れずに), which means "I can only sleep at night".
5. Eve
Eve is a Japanese singer-songwriter and Vocaloid producer. He began his career in the music industry by doing covers on Nico Nico Douga. His music has been featured in several popular anime such as Dororo (Yamiyo), Jujutsu Kaisen (Kaikai Kitan), dan Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (Ao no Waltz).

6. Yuuri
Yuuri is a Japanese singer-songwriter and YouTuber. He started his career as a vocalist for the four-member rock band, The Bugzy, until they disbanded in May 2019.
After the group disbanded, Yuuri started performing on the streets of Tokyo — around Shibuya. He rose to prominence when My First Story's vocalist, Hiro, jumped in and sang along with him.
His first song was Kakurenbo, then later he released other songs called Kagome, Peter Pan, and Dry Flower.
7. Kenshi Yonezu
Kenshi Yonezu is a Japanese musician, singer-songwriter, record producer and illustrator who started releasing Vocaloid music under the stage name Hachi in 2009. In 2012, he debuted under his real name, releasing music with his own voice. He has sold at least 4.2 million physical copies and more than 7 million digital copies in Japan.
8. King Gnu
King Gnu is a Japanese band formed in 2013. It consists of Daiki Tsuneta (Vocalist & Guitarist), Satoru Iguchi (Vocalist & Keyboardist), Kazuki Arai (Bassist) and Yu Seki (Drummer). Daiki Tsuneta is also the band's main songwriter.
9. Official Hige DANdism
Official Hige Dandism, commonly abbreviated as Higedan, is a Japanese pop band formed in Shimane, Japan in 2012 by Satoshi Fujihara (lead vocals, piano), Daisuke Ozasa (lead guitar, backing vocals), Makoto Narazaki (bass, saxophone, backing vocals) and Masaki Matsuura (drums, percussion, backing vocals).
After signing a record deal with major label Pony Canyon in 2018, Official Hige Dandism released their debut single "No Doubt", the lead single of the mini album, Stand by You EP. The following year, the band released their second single, "Pretender", which peaked at number three on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 year-end chart in 2019. Their debut studio album, Traveler, was released on October 9, 2019 and reached number one on the Japanese Albums Chart.
10. Zutomayo
Zutto Mayonaka de Iinoni, more commonly known with the abbreviation ZUTOMAYO, is a Japanese rock group that debuted in 2018. Naturally, the group has the secret of never releasing a full member list, crediting different people for music, arrangement, and music video production each time. The only member to reoccuring in all of the group's outputs is the vocalist, an unknown woman named "ACA-Ne".
Despite the lack of information known about this group, the group is a commercial success. Zutomayo's three EPs have reached 8th, 1st, and 2nd positions on the Oricon Albums Chart, respectively. The group was also invited to perform at the 2019 Fuji Rock Festival a year after their debut.
