VALORANT has introduced the newest Agent, Astra. This new Agent is more suitable for players who have high macro, especially in reading the map. Astra is a Controller who brings significant impact just with her presence on the battlefield. Characteristic

Astra is an Agent originating from Ghana. In terms of her abilities, Astra uses cosmic powers to change the course of the battle. It makes her an amazing Controller for her team. With these powers, Astra can channel her astral form to read the minds of her opponents strategically -- making her always one step ahead of the enemy.

While Astra looks powerful, it’s not an easy task to play her! You need to have a great understanding of how to position each skill that you cast. Aside from that, reading the opposing team’s rotation is also a crucial aspect when you use Astra.

Abilities

As for her abilities, Astra relies heavily on her Astral Form/Cosmic Divide (X) -- more or less similar to Reyna, who only needs one skill slot.

• Astral Form/Cosmic Divide (X): Astra enters Astral Form and can place Stars (traps) by left-clicking. These Stars can be reactivated into Gravity Wells (C), Nova Pulse (Q), or Nebula (E). If you’re unsure of the Stars’ positions, use Dissipate (F) to retrieve them. When Cosmic Divide is charged,  you can right-click and left-click to change the locations. Cosmic Divide blocks bullets and heavily dampens audio.
• Gravity Well (C): Upon activating Stars to form a Gravity Well, you’ll create a force field that pulls nearby enemies toward the center before it explodes. The explosion will inflict massive damage;
• Nova Pulse (Q): Players who are affected by Nova Pulse will be stunned and concussed;
• Nebula (E): Nebula will create smoke -- hindering the opponent’s vision;
• Dissipate (F): As mentioned above, Astra players can relocate the Stars. When the Stars are retaken, a fake Nebula (smoke) will be formed briefly.

First Impressions

Upon first seeing Astra’s skill set, to be honest, I was confused. The reason being, you will have to rely on the Stars you create by using Astral Form (X).

While you can place these Stars anywhere on the map, it doesn’t necessarily make her an OP Agent. I had a difficult time trying to understand how to use these skills properly given that it takes time to set up the Stars before you can use them.

Although it took time to master her skills, I have to admit that Riot Games did an amazing job at creating Astra. This is a fantastic milestone as no one would have thought that these kinds of skills could be implemented in a tactical shooter.

In my opinion, Astra is perfect for those who are not really good in terms of the mechanics but have amazing macros -- as she will be suitable for high IQ players. If you can master her skills and gameplay, Astra can easily become a highly dangerous Agent.

Does Astra Have the Meta-Changing Potentials?

As for her meta-changing potentials, I believe she has them. Based on her skill set, Astra has the potential to challenge the current best Controllers, Omen and Brimstone. She can be so useful in both defense and attack, giving her versatility.

On offense, you can use Gravity Well and Nova Pulse to surprise your opponents, if your allies grant you the vision. For bombs, you can use Cosmic Divide to dampen the sound of the explosion and block the incoming bullets.

On defense, you can strategically position the Stars to protect Site A and B simultaneously! That’s insane, don’t you think?

Verdict

Simply put, Astra is an Agent worth mastering. Her insanely annoying skill set can really change the course of the game. I believe that when she’s released on Wednesday, March 3, she will be an imba Agent and a popular one among higher Tier players.
