Attack on Titan manga creator Hajime Isayama confirmed in a message he posted that the final scene in the anime adaptation was made to have some differences with the original manga. He mentioned that he asked to redraw the storyboard of the final scene on a small scale. Isayama also expressed his apologies and gratitude to anime studio MAPPA for the challenges faced in adapting this ending.

Previously, in the Jonetsu Tairiku documentary program in November 2018, Isayama had shown a glimpse of the rough draft of the final panel of the original manga. However, the Attack on Titan manga was co-published with Kodansha and the final edition was only published on April 9th 2021.

The second part of Attack on Titan Final Season, titled THE FINAL CHAPTERS (Shingeki no Kyojin The Final Season Kanketsu-hen), premiered on Saturday, November 4th 2023, on NHK General channel at 24:00 Japan time. In addition to airing on NHK, THE FINAL CHAPTERS can also be seen on Crunchyroll and Hulu. THE FINAL CHAPTERS has a duration of about 85 minutes.

Hajime Isayama started the Attack on Titan manga series in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009, and completed the series in April 2021. The 34th volume of the manga, which is the final volume, was released in June 2021. Kodansha publisher USA Publishing released the manga in digital and print versions in English, with the final volume published in October 2021.

Attack on Titan was first adapted into an anime series in April 2013, and the second season was broadcast in April 2017. The first part of the third season aired in July 2018, followed by the second part in April 2019.

Attack on Titan The Final Season first aired on NHK in December 2020 with a total of 16 episodes. Funimation and Crunchyroll both broadcast this anime with English subtitles. Adult Swim's Toonami event block also began airing the anime in January 2021, while Funimation began broadcasting the English version in the same month.

Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 aired with the 76th episode on NHK General channel in January 2022, lasting 12 episodes. This second part can also be viewed through Crunchyroll and Funimation. The first part of Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS aired as a special one-hour episode on March 3rd 2023.

Crunchyroll broadcast this special episode under the title Attack on Titan Final Season THE FINAL CHAPTERS Special 1. Additionally, the anime is also available on Hulu. Toonami started airing the first part on September 9. The new theme song, "Under the Tree," was sung by SIM.
