Attack on Titan is a widely popular manga and anime series that tells the story of humanity's battle for survival against the Titans, the gigantic creatures that prey on humans. One of the main locations in the story is Marley, a fictional nation in the Attack on Titan universe.
Marley is a strong nation that plays an important role in the conflict between humans and the Titans. Marley also has a long history and has been involved in complicated conflicts with other countries in Attack on Titan. This nation began colonization and territorial expansion to other countries a few decades ago.
On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to show you a comprehensive look at Marleyan history and the reason behind their hatred towards the Eldians. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
Marley: History and Origins
Marley was one of the nations that suffered under the tyrannous rule of the Eldians during the Titan era that first began 2000 years ago. After conquering most of the world, the Eldians began to feud over the ownership of the Nine Titans. Marley took advantage of this conflict to overthrow Eldia and use the chaos to steal the Titan's powers.
Throughout the Great Titan War, Marley managed to secure the possession of the Colossal Titan, Beast Titan, WarHammer Titan, Armored Titan, Female Titan, Jaw Titan, and Cart Titan.
Marley then began to take over the lands that had previously been conquered by Eldia. At the end of the Great Titan War, King Fritz retreated with the Founding Titan to Paradis Island, formally surrendering and promising not to use force if his people were left alone. Marley took advantage of the moment to conquer most of the world using the seven Titan Shifters they had stolen.
Years later in the Attack on Titan universe, other nations' technology in weaponries begin to catch up with the Titans in strength. Marley has been gradually losing dominance on the battlefield and began to lose territories as they relied on the Titan's powers instead of developing new weapons. It is no longer the invincible superpower in the world, and it is only a matter of time before Marley is conquered by other countries.
Why Marleyans and Eldians Hate Each Other
The centuries-old feud between Eldia and Marley is still ongoing today. Marleyans have always hated the Eldians for the terrible crimes their ancestors committed when the Eldians conquered the entire planet by drowning it in blood. After the Great Titan war, the Eldians whom King Fritz didn't bring to Paradis Island were jumbled together in the Liberio Internment Zone in Marley.
Eldians who were held captive in the zone had to submit to the bigotry of the Marleyans. As a result, the Eldia Restorationist Movement secretly began to emerge within Liberio as the impoverished Eldians attempted to destroy Marley. Only Eldians are capable of becoming Titans, so Marley must oppress them and force a select few to fight on Marley's behalf in exchange for becoming honorable Marleyans.
The Eldians on Paradis Island's memories of Marley were erased by King Fritz, but they rediscovered their hatred when they learned that the attacks of the Colossal Titan and Armored Titan were actually carried out by Marley.
The attacks resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people as Marley attempted to recapture the Founding Titans to increase their military might. The conflict between Paradis Island and Marley will never end until one of them is destroyed.
Marley's Key Figures: The Warrior Unit
Marley's Warrior Unit comprises selected Eldian soldiers who are given one of the Titan powers — they were referred to as Warriors. One of the most prominent is Reiner Braun. Towards the end of his tenure as the Armored Titan, Reiner feels immense guilt for his actions on Paradis Island. All he wanted was to become a respectable Marleyan, so his family could live together.
After the arrest of Annie Leonhart and the death of Bertholdt Hoover, Porco Galliard and PIeck Finger also joined the Warrior Unit. Porco is the younger brother of Marcel, who had the power of the Jaw Titan before he was eaten by Ymir on Paradis Island.
Porco now has the power of the Jaw Titan, and Pieck has the power of the Cart Titan, becoming a Warrior so that his father can receive proper medical care.
There are also Gabi Braun and Falco, who are Warrior candidates — they both wish to inherit the Armored Titan. Gabi is the better candidate to inherit the Armored Titan power. She also believes that the Eldians on Paradis Island were a bunch of filthy demons who deserved to die.
Instead, Falco only hopes to inherit the Armored Titan, so Gabi doesn't inherit it. He didn't want Gabi to suffer like Reiner, who only had 13 years left in his life after inheriting the Titan's power.
