Since the announcement in January 2019, we only see a very few leaks for the latest film from DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Birds of Prey. The only thing that we know is that Margot Robbie who plays Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad will reprise her role as the Joker’s lover.

After waiting for months, Warner Bros as the production house of Birds of Prey film finally gives more leaks about this film from its first poster. Besides Harley Quinn, this film will also present other DC characters such as Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).

On the same poster, we can see the villain character, Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) and also Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). It is possible that other important characters from DC will make an appearance on this film like Batman in Suicide Squad.

Birds of Prey film itself is a very important film for the DCEU. Unlike its rival, DCEU has always been considered fail to present a big war that involved many superheroes in one screen. This was seen from the film Batman vs Superman, Suicide Squad and Justice League which get unfavorable reviews.

Although it's not as popular as Justice League, Birds of Prey is the superteam that has been around since 22 years ago. For more details, let’s discuss the long story of the superteam whose members are all women.

The Birth of Birds of Prey in the Comic

Birds of Prey superteam was first introduced in the comic Black "Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey" published in 1996. This comic is a one-shot comic by Chuck Dixon and the artist, Gary Frank.

This comic tells the story of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of James Gordon (commissioner of Gotham City Police Department), who was handicapped because of Joker’s attack. Because she was no longer able to walk, Barbara was forced to stop fighting crimes in Gotham using her secret identity, Batgirl.

Although she was no longer able to fight the criminals directly on Gotham street, Barbara is not giving up to make her city better. With her new identity as Oracle, Barbara keeps helping Batman by sharing various of information and other technical matters behind the computer screen.

Not only Batman, Barbara also helps other female superhero, Dinah Lance or known as Black Canary. It was through the collaboration of Oracle and Black Canary that the Bird of Prey superteam first formed. 

In 2003, the writer Gail Simone officially added Helena Bertinelli, known as Huntress, as a new member of Birds of Prey. Since then the three superheroes often appeared together in comics and also DC animated films.

DC also plans to release the new comic for Birds of Prey next year. Together with Harley Quinn's solo comics, Birds of Prey comic will take on more mature themes.

Birds of Prey TV Series

Birds of Prey film is not the first live-action adaptation of this superhero trio. In 2002, a TV series with the same title once aired on the television channel owned by Warner Bros.

This TV series tells the story of Birds of Prey who tried to protect Gotham city that was left by Batman. The three of them work together to fight Harley Quinn who is trying to destroy Gotham in order to free the Joker who is behind the bar.

Birds of Prey TV Series appeared before the superhero trend began and received less attention from the public. The result was the series had to be stopped when it only reached 13 episodes in 2013.

Of course DC and Warner Bros. hoped that Birds of Prey film that airs next year will get a better reception than the television series or the colossal superhero film from another DCEU.
