There was a theory circulating that Joy Boy in One Piece was inspired by Joyoboyo or Jayabaya, the King of Java. There are various reasons, but the main one is because Joyoboyo lived 900 years ago, which is not much different from Joy Boy who lived 800 years ago in the world of One Piece.

According to Nathanistic's Facebook page, Joy Boy was inspired by Joyboy in Michael Page and Robert Ingpen's Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were, where Joyboy is described as a figure from Caribbean folklore. He is believed by locals to be a man who can cure various diseases with his drumming.

Anyone who hears the sound of this drum will inevitably have to dance until they throw away all the sadness they feel. Joyboy himself is always smiling when facing various problems. If you notice, this is similar to Gear Five when first seen in Onigashima.

What do you guys think? This seems a lot more plausible than the Joyoboyo theory that has been buzzing for a while? Stay tuned for more interesting discussions about One Piece anime and manga at Dunia Games.
