For newcomers who recently following the hype train of superhero movies, maybe you can get confused by the timeline of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. It was started back in 2008, Marvel felt a massive joy by the success of Iron Man that kickstart the franchise. These movies are standing on their own, independent timeline and different from their comic book counterparts. Here are MCU’s 23 movies based on the timeline:
23. Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The First Avenger becomes the first movie that you can watch for the first time. This movie tells about Steve Rogers, a skinny man with several diseases and wanted to become a soldier one day. His will later reaches the Strategic Scientific Reserve division, and later turns him into a superhuman and nicknamed him Captain America. Rogers manages to prove himself as a leader and a fighter on defeating H.Y.D.R.A. along with his friend Bucky Barnes and the others.
22. Iron Man
After watching Captain America, now you can watch this movie that will tell you about Tony Stark or later known as Iron Man. This movie tells the story of a millionaire and the owner of Stark Industries. Even though he’s very rich, he's very selfless and arrogant. Later, Tony successfully being kidnapped by the terrorist group that once partnered with his father in Afghanistan. To escape captivity, Tony creates an arc reactor and an armor, and later famous as Iron Man.
21. Incredible Hulk
After the success of creating Steve Rogers as a super soldier, many scientists are racing to create a similar serum, and the successful one is a gamma serum created by Culver University. Unfortunately, the serum test on Bruce Banner turns out to be a failure and turns himself into a giant green monster called Hulk.
20. Iron Man 2
The enthusiast of Marvel fans who loved the previous movie turns out making MCU interested in making the sequel. In Iron Man 2, Tony Stark, along with Pepper Potts and James Rhodes, facing Ivan Vanko, the son of Stark’s father’s business partner who invented the arc reactor and wants to kill Stark. In this movie, you can see the first appearance of Black Widow and Nick Fury (even though his appearance was in the first movie in case you missed it) who serves as the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.
19. Thor
Thor is one of many strongest Avengers, and it'll be if you know his story by watching his first movie. Adapting the Nordic mythology, Thor tells about the journey of Odin’s son, the guardian of nine realms. Due to his arrogance, Thor sparks a war in Asgard. Odin, who mad at him, later exile Thor into Midgard (earth) along with his hammer, Mjolnir, which can only be lifted by those who are worthy. But at the same time, Loki, Thor’s brother, turns out has the ambition to conquer Asgard. With his lover, Jane Foster and a friend Dr. Selvig, Thor manages to go back to Asgard and become Odin’s successor.
18. The Avengers
The Avengers is formed when Loki creates chaos on earth to take Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D. with a staff attached to Mind Stone. He almost destroys New York but fortunately, The Avengers, a group that consists of superheroes, comes to the rescue. Battle of New York closes with the victor of The Avengers and they successfully apprehend Loki and defeat the Chitauri Legions and later secure the Tesseract.
17. Iron Man 3
After the Battle of New York, Tony Stark suffers a trauma. Later, he is forced to face his enemies from the past, and one of them is Mandarin. The Mandarin is only a made-up name, but the real villain is someone who got broken-hearted by Stark due to being rejected for cooperation years earlier, Aldrich Killian. Not only has the best story, but you can see all Stark’s armors that join the fight to defeat Killian.
16. Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World is a movie that tells the origin of Reality Stone that sought after by Thanos. Jane Foster, who still Thor’s lover, manages to find Aether, the power source of Reality Stone. Aether, which possessed her, turns out inviting Malekith's interest to take it in order to destroy Earth. But the attempt successfully thwarted by Thor.
15. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Steve Rogers resides in Washington DC after the Battle of New York, must go back into war alongside Black Widow and Falcon to face Winter Soldier. It turns out that Bucky is the man behind the name, his long lost friend, who Rogers thought that he was already dead during the attack on H.Y.D.R.A. back in 1942. It turns out that Barnes was brainwashed by the Soviet government to create the super-soldier.
14. Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy can be said as an MCU movie filled with fresh jokes. It tells about Peter Quill, who abducted by aliens since he was young. He later trained as a space thief and later called as Star-Lord. Along with his friends Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot, Quill succeeded to save the galaxy and obtaining an Orb that sought after by Ronan the Accuser.
13. Avengers: Age of Ultron
When Strucker trying to create an Artificial Intelligence from Loki’s scepter, Stark also interested to create the same A.I. But the A.I that he created alongside Banner, later name itself as Ultron, turns rogue and wants to destroy humankind. With the Avengers, Stark manages to defeat Ultron. In this movie also, you can see Avengers’ new members, and they are Rhodes, Falcon, Scarlett Witch, and Vision.
12. Ant-Man
Ant-Man is a movie that tells about Scott Lang’s journey who receives a special suit from Dr. Hank Pym. With this suit, Lang can enlarge and shrink his body, even he can control a wave of ants. Because it’s too dangerous, the suit is later hidden by Pym and later used by Lang to save the world.
11. Captain America: Civil War
After the event of fighting Crossbone, The Avengers receives backlashes from the public. Stark alongside other Avengers, are ordered by General Ross to sign the Sokovia Accord. The accord is filled with a statement that the Avengers have to follow the government, but after the accords, the Avengers instead split into two sides, one led by Captain America and the other led by Iron Man.
10. Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange tells about Dr. Stephen Strange who receives magical powers after curing his paralyze post a car accident. No doctor can cure his injury, aside from Ancient One who cure him and worthy of keeping the Time Stone. But his story doesn’t end there, Strange must face Kaecillus who betrays the Ancient One to resurrect Dormammu.
9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Aside from uniting to fend off evil and guarding Annulax Battery against alien interferences, this movie also tells the origins of Star-Lord as he encounters his father, Ego, who wants to take advantage of his son as his powers inherited to him to conquer the galaxy.
8. Spider-Man: Homecoming
After appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man finally receives his solo movie. The movie tells about Peter Parker who returns to his house under the surveillance of Tony Stark. Due to his high spirit to become an Avenger, Peter must deal with Vulture who uses high tech gadgets. In this movie also, Peter receives his Spider-Man suit made by Stark.
7. Thor: Ragnarok
The peace in Asgard shattered again with the arrival of Hela in Thor: Ragnarok. This movie tells about how Thor and the last Valkyrie trying to defeat Hela who wants to take over Asgard. With Hulk's help, Hela eventually defeated even though the Asgard also destroyed.
6. Black Panther
Following the death of his father, T'Challa replaces his father as the king of Wakanda. He must continue his father’s legacy to protect his kingdom. But his attempt on ruling Wakanda encounters many obstacles, as he must fight against Killmonger who wants to take over the throne from him. But Killmonger's attempt successfully thwarted with the help of Everett K. Ross who is a member of the C.I.A and the Dora Milaje.
5. Avengers: Infinity War
In this movie, the Avengers and the Guardians of The Galaxy are working together to defend the Six Infinity Stones which sought after by Thanos. But the attempt failed and cause half-life in the universe to extinct. With the Avengers and Guardians of The Galaxy crossing paths, Infinity War is a movie that is worth to watch.
4. Ant-Man and The Wasp
The Ant-Man and The Wasp movie becomes the answer to how the Avengers can defeat Thanos in the future. But this movie is more focusing on Ant-Man and The Wasp facing Ghost from stealing Dr. Pym’s technology.
3. Captain Marvel
Aside from using Dr.Pym’s technology, Captain Marvel also serves as the best weapon to defeat Thanos and his army. This first female superhero movie in the MCU tells about Carol Danvers who becomes the savior of the universe. With her powers, Danvers attempts to recover his memory that she lost when she still on Earth
2. Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame serves as the answer for the remaining Avengers to recover what they had lost after the events in Infinity War. This movie serves as the closure of all 21 movies combined into one. You can see how Thanos loses against the united powers of the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Wakanda Tribe, and the Sorcerers.
1. Spider-Man: Far From Home
Even though Endgame serves as the closure of Infinity Saga, but MCU doesn’t stop there. By releasing Spider-Man: Far From Home, it looks like there’s still hope to see the Avengers again in the future. The movie tells about Peter Parker and his friend’s trip to Europe. But it’s not the fun that they had, but instead, Parker must deal with Mysterio who is trying to take over the technologies left by Stark.
