Amid his busy schedule of numerous gigs as the singer and frontman of a popular band, Noah’s Ariel still spends time doing his hobby: assembling Gundam models (gunpla). In case you’re not familiar with it, Gundam is a sci-fi series from Sunrise studio that features numerous giant robots called "Gundam".
The franchise features numerous robots that are also made into Action Figures. Collecting and assembling these Action Figures is Ariel’s hobby. Ariel Noah shared his reasons for his interest in gunpla with Dunia Games on Episode 45 of DG CHEAT (31/08).
Ariel revealed that he has been a Gundam fan since high school. However, there’s a moment in time when his mind was completely taken away from everything Gundam-related due to his schedule. But when he toured across the country, he would spend his spare time in hotel rooms. And when he was stuck in hotels, he returned to his hobby. He would bring some of his Gundam models and assemble them in his room.
“The first time I got into (gunpla) was in high school, it’s probably around the year 2000, I only collected the more common ones. I was hooked by the (detailed) mechanics, but then I forgot about it. When I began (my career) with the band, we went on a long tour. That’s when I got the idea, we often spent a lot of time in hotel rooms. We would spend a day or two, so I thought why not bring my Gundam models, and build them in my hotel room? It took my mind away (from boredom).”
As a Gundam enthusiast, Ariel revealed that he’s fascinated with Gundam models due to their mechanics. But he eventually got bored by just assembling and displaying the models. So, he began to learn about airbrushing his Gundam models.
“It gets boring if you only assemble them. But then I learned about airbrushing, so I began to paint (the Gundam models). That’s when the boredom began to fade away. Before that, when I finished (assembling) them, I just put them on a display. But as I started to paint them, it’s like, now it gets more exciting, there’s another step that I can take.“
So far, Ariel has a collection of about 50 Gundam models, some of them are Perfect Grades and Master Grades that he’s yet to build. He also expressed his disappointment that his favorite Gundam, Barbatos, is yet to have a Perfect Grade model.
“I actually don’t have a favorite (model from my collection) so far. The reason why I don’t have any favorites is that I’m currently obsessed with (Gundam) Barbatos. However, Barbatos is yet to get a PG (Perfect Grade) version. Perhaps when Barbatos gets a PG, it will be my favorite. But the Unleashed (Gundam) 782 is probably my favorite for now.” Ariel even stated that he’s willing to sacrifice some of his PG Gundam in his collection to be built into a custom Gundam if Bandai doesn’t release a PG version of his favorite Gundam, Barbatos.
Ariel usually spends 2 days building a Perfect Grade Gundam, and always enjoys spending spare time admiring the detailed mechanics of each Gundam model he built. “If I have some time to spare, it normally takes 2 days. Actually, they say it takes approximately 16-10 hours, but I love to build them by myself, and I sort them, then decide which part (should I build first). And then I spend time admiring (the detailed mechanics).”
Ariel said that, to him, building a Gundam model is much like solving puzzles, and he revealed he enjoys those kinds of things. He enjoys the process of sorting out parts and building his Gundam models. Are you also a gunpla enthusiast like the famous musician?
