If We Think About It, Jiraiya Might Be A Bad Teacher for Naruto

Jiraiya spends three years training Naruto, but it seems like he failed to teach ninjutsu to Naruto. Is it true? Check the explanation here!

Anime & Manga | 09 October

The latest episode of Boruto recalled Jiraiya, a talented ninja that taught Naruto. According to the official guide book and the explanation of other characters, Jiraiya taught Naruto how to break genjutsu, taijutsu skills, and controlling the chakra of Kurama the Nine-Tailed Beast better.

But the reality is different in the anime and manga since we often see a furious Kurama. When Naruto receives his power-up, he only needs to train for five to six months to learn Wind Release, master the Rasengan, creating Rasenshuriken, and even learn Senjutsu – and Jiraiya never taught him that.

Is this theory true? On this occasion, let’s have a detailed look at Jiraiya’s failure as a teacher for Naruto from the explanation below!

2,5 Years Taught By Jiraiya Vs. 2 Month Taught By Kakashi and Fukasaku

After spending two years on a journey with Jiraiya, Naruto learned:

  • a technique to break a simple genjutsu, (that Shikamaru and Sakura did during the Chuunin Exam)
  • an incomplete giant-sized Rasengan,
  • and the ability to absorb more chakra from Kurama – with the possibility to be enraged if he fails to control it.

While these are the things Kakashi taught to Naruto in two months:

  • the ability to manipulate chakra into an elemental release,
  • using Kage Bunshin not just for fighting but to learn a Jutsu 100x faster,
  • perfected the Rasengan by infusing Wind Release,
  • Creating a new Jutsu: Rasenshuriken.

And this is the thing Naruto learned from Fukasaku after spending several weeks in Myoboku Mountain:

  • Not just master the Sage Mode or Senjutsu, but he also realizes that he can use Kage Bunshin to increase the duration of Sage Mode to 10 minutes.

An achievement that Minato and Jiraiya failed to reach.

You can see that in three months, Naruto learned more things in comparison to his time with Jiraiya.

Irrational Development of Rasengan?

As explained before, Jiraiya spends two years teaching Naruto an incomplete Rasengan.

According to the manga Volume 18, chapter 155, Jiraiya stated that the third and last phase of learning Rasengan is to control the size. By concentrating the chakra vortex at the smallest point as possible, Rasengan’s destructive force will significantly increase. The point is the smaller and denser the chakra vortex, the stronger the Rasengan.

Then why does Jiraoya decide to let Naruto learn an incomplete giant-sized Rasengan? If Naruto has a complete understanding of Rasengan, then it will be easier for him to infuse his Wind Release to the Jutsu.

Defending Jiraiya’s Way of Teaching

It doesn’t mean that Jiraiya is an irresponsible teacher.

Firstly, there’s a possibility that Jiraiya knows of the training method using Kage Bunshin. But this method has high risk. The more Kage Bunshin Naruto creates, the higher the chance fo Kurama to be enraged. Not mention Jiraiya doesn’t have a Wood Release like Yamato to help him seal the Tailed Beast chakra when they are enraged.

Secondly, Jiraiya is on a journey to gather intel on Akatsuki. He decided that it’s best if they are training while moving from one location to another to avoid being detected by Akatsuki.

Lastly, we can see that Jiraiya trains Naruto’s mental state and mindset. In Shippuden, not only Naruto appear more mature, but he is a lot more patient, he thinks before he takes action, and has a more profound affection for the people around him. ‘Character Building’ is the emphasize of Jiraiya’s teaching – knowing that Naruto never has a family to teach him all of that.

That’s a short explanation as to why Jiraiya’s teaching seems ineffective to make Naruto a better ninja physically and technically speaking. But on the other side, the time Naruto and Jiraiya spend together for two and a half years make him more mature.
