Forged in the Barrens, the latest expansion of Hearthstone is officially released. The update starts Year of The Gryphon with a shout of  “blood and thunder!”

Inspired by the classic World of Warcraft, Forged in the Barrens introduces 135 new cards that capture the story's favorites, impressive characters, and the dangers of the iconic wilderness.

In order to survive in this challenging land, players must be able to face all the mighty powers of the Barrens. Forged in the Barrens introduces the keyword Frenzy, which gives minions a powerful effect after surviving an attack.

Players can now also add Ranked Spells to their deck. The spell cards become stronger in the 5-mana crystal, and can reach their final form in the 10-mana crystal. Spell Cards also have Spell Schools, which increase the potential for synergy when using Spells.

Hearthstone made a new card debut in Forged in the Barrens with 10 Legendary Mercenary minions. One each for each class and their narrative will continue for one year in the Year of Gryphon.

"Forged in the Barrens evokes some of Warcraft's most iconic stories and themes and its cards convey the passion and fury of the Horde," said J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "Alongside the new Core set, players have the most festive opening of the Year of the Gryphon."

Hearthstone Core Set & Classic Format 

You can try the Hearthstone Core Set and Classic Format today and it's free for all players. This feature can be unlocked when leveling up. The Hearthstone Core set replaces the Basic and Classic sets with a collection of 235 cards from previous to newest sets.

Created to adapt and evolve with Hearthstone, the Core set will receive updates every year. It will serve as a solid foundation for the various expansions that will be born in that Hearthstone year as well as a new base for new and old players.

Previously, the Classic Hearthstone format was launched to invite players back to the game to experience the game when it first launched in 2014. Alongside Standard and Wild modes, the Classic format is a standalone format with its own ranks and prizes, including all Hearthstone cards in their original form when the game was launched.
