Tatsuo Mikami, or usually known as Coach Mikami, is the personal trainer of Genzo Wakabayashi. He was the goalkeeper of the Japanese national team. The man that coached the Japanese junior team has intriguing facts that you might not know. Read those facts below!

1. The First Man to Recognize Roberto Hongo

Roberto Hongo was first shown as a mysterious drunkard that coincidentally passes by Tsubasa’s practice field. Roberto saw the potential of Tsubasa and decides to train him, so Tsubasa turns to be a great player. At that moment, Roberto decided to coach team Nankatsu.

In the anime of Captain Tsubasa, Coach Mikami is the first person to recognize Roberto. After knowing that Tsubasa is coached by a former Brazillian player, Mikami gives extra training to Wakabayashi so he can block all of Tsubasa’s shot.

2. Plays the Same Role with Roberto Hongo and Kira Kozo

Roberto Hongo intends to make Tsubasa the greatest soccer player in the world by coaching, giving him all kinds of skills. Roberto is the man that advises Tsubasa to play as a mid-fielder

While coach Kira is the personal trainer of Kojiro Hyuga after Hyuga no longer plays with Meiwa FC. Kira is disappointed that his body can’t compete at the world stage, so he places his hopes in Hyuga and intends to make Hyuga the best striker in the history of soccer. He trains Hyuga with a heavy ball to help him learn a new shooting technique.

The same can be said about Mikami that’s the personal trainer of Wakabayashi. He hopes that Wakabashi will carry on his hope and will to be the best goalkeeper in Japan.

3. An Alumni of Shutetsu Elementary School

At Captaintsubasa.wikia.com, it is explained that Mikami was a student at Shutetsu elementary school, the same school Wakabayashi attends. It’s possible that Wakabayashi attends the school after the recommendation of Mikami. Maybe Mikami thought of placing Wakabayashi in a school where he starts his road to success and hopes that the same will happen to his mentee. 

And it turns out that Wakabayashi becomes the best goalkeeper after going to Shutetsu. It’s possible that the Tori Kago (birdcage) technique that was used against Nankatsu was taught by Mikami.the reason being Tori Kago is a technique commonly used by a professional soccer player.

4. Often Mistaken as Wakabayashi’s Father

Many fans mistaken coach Mikami as the Wakabayashi’s father since they live in the same house. In reality, he is just the personal trainer of Wakabayashi to help him become the best goalkeeper in Japan. The whereabouts of Wakabayashi’s parents are never explained.

Because Wakabayashi is the son of a wealthy couple, it’s possible that his parents left him under the care of coach Mikami while being trained to become the greatest goalkeeper; because it is what Wakabayashi wants. Aside from Wakabayashi and coach Mikami, there’s also a guard dog named John.
