In the March issue of Shueisha's Cocohana magazine, it was revealed that Eri Sakai will launch a new manga entitled Tsubame wa Modotte Konai (The Swallow Won't Return), which is adapted from Natsuo Kirino's novel of the same title. Tsubame wa Modotte Kona is planned to be launched in the next issue of the magazine on February 28th 2024. This announcement was also shared by Sakai via his personal Twitter account.

The story in the novel Tsubame wa Modotte Kona focuses on a 29 year old woman named Riki, who decides to leave her job as a caregiver in her hometown in Hokkaido and move to Tokyo to work in a hospital. However, the tiring and uncertain work left her with financial problems.

When she hears about a well-paying side job from her co-worker, Teru, she decides to become a surrogate at the Japanese branch of Arte, a specialist American assisted reproduction clinic.

Tsubame wa Modotte Kona was first published by Kirino in March 2022 and won the Yoshikawa Eiji Award for works of fiction with extraordinary popularity.

Previously, Sakai released a manga entitled He's Expecting (Kentaro Hiyama's First Pregnancy) in Kodansha's Be Love magazine in 2012. Kodansha published one compiled book volume for the manga, and the manga has also been licensed by Kodansha USA Publishing and published in digital format. Apart from that, this manga also inspired a live action series that will air in April 2022.

In addition to this adaptation project, Sakai also recently started a new manga project entitled Shosansei no nai Nigorikawa (Unproductive Nigorikawa) which began serialization in Futabasha's Jour magazine on January 4th 2024.

With a background of extensive experience in creating quality works, Sakai's decision to adapt Natsuo Kirino's novel into manga form is expected to attract the attention of new readers as well as loyal fans. Fans can look forward to seeing how Sakai will revive the interesting story from the novel into a compelling work in manga form.
