Here are 15 things you might not have known about DIO Brando from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Intrigued by DIO Brando who is the main antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime? Let's learn about him here.
Dio Brando Facts
1. His Name Was Inspired by The Godfather Film Actor Named Marlon Brando
DIO Brando has many inspirations for his name. First, the creator of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series named Hirohiko Araki wanted his villain name to sound cool, which is why he named him DIO which means "God". Second, DIO refers to the American heavy metal band with the same name.
And third, the name Brando is a reference to Marlon Brando, a legendary actor who played a mafia boss named Don Corleone in The Godfather. With these in mind, it should come as no surprise to learn that Hirohiko Araki is a huge fan of American pop culture.
2. The Character Was Meant to Be Completely Bad
There are plenty of villains out there that are a mix of good and bad trait. However, DIO Brando was not one of them. Conversely, Hirohiko Araki intended DIO's character to be completely evil, which is why he had DIO discard his literal humanity, as a symbol of DIO's choice to discard his figurative humanity.
3. He Is The Son Of A Drunk Named Dario Brando
DIO Brando is the son of a man named Dario Brando, who discovers the site of a train crash involving the Joestar family. Due to the mistaken impression that Dario had saved DIO and his son Jonathan, George Joestar promised Dario help.
That's why George ended up adopting DIO after Dario's drunken death. Unfortunately, DIO's extremely abusive upbringing had a very negative effect on his personality, which made his traits develop rapidly.
4. He Turned Into a Vampire After Wearing a Stone Mask from South America
Finally, DIO Brando's crime culminated when he used a mysterious stone mask from South America to turn into a vampire. This incident would be a setback to his humanity, which made DIO even more evil.
5. He Lost His Body in Arc One
Even by villain character standards, DIO Brando is pretty tough. For example, he actually survived being reduced to just his head in the first arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, before launching an attack on Jonathan Joestar while he was on his honeymoon with his wife Erina.
Once again, DIO is apparently killed when Jonathan manages to sink the ship despite being badly injured, while Erina manages to escape the ship with the other survivors of DIO's massacre on board.

6. Survive by Grafting His Head on His Adoptive Brother's Body
It turns out that DIO Brando managed to survive by transplanting his head onto Jonathan's body before sealing himself in a coffin to wait for time to pass. Eventually, the coffin was found by a rescue ship, thus starting the events of the third arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
7. He Dies in the Third Arc
In the third part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure storyline, DIO Brando was defeated by Jonathan's grandson named Joseph, and Joseph's grandson named Jotaro, as well as their friends. Afterwards, Joseph and Jotaro exposed DIO's corpse to sunlight, thereby confirming that the vampire was really dead. Even so, that right doesn't stop DIO from having plot relevance in the next part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure storyline.
8. He Has a Son Named Giorno
The protagonist of the fifth storyline of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is Giorno Giovanna, who is DIO Brando's son who became a father after escaping from a shipwreck. Technically, Giorno counts as a member of the Joestar family because DIO was using Jonathan's body at the time, so he exhibits an odd combination of characteristics from the two men.
9. Has a Stand Called The World
For many, their knowledge of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure story will be limited to the physical manifestations of psychic powers called Stands, which appear in the third part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure story arc. In DIO Brando's case, his Stand is called The World, which possesses the speed, strength, and senses of a superhuman. However, his greatest strength is the ability to stop time for an extended period of time, in which DIO is free to act as he pleases.
10. He’s Also Known For the Muda Muda Muda Meme
One of the Internet memes that emerged due to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series is the Muda Muda Muda meme, which refers to a phrase that DIO Brando's Stand called The World shouts when it is attacking. For those who are curious, "Muda" means "useless".
11. He Can See the Future
Stands became a major element of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, but the series started by focusing on an energy force named Hamon instead. DIO eventually gains Stand access and although The World is his main tactic, he actually proves to have other abilities at his disposal as well.
DIO can use Stands that operate in an identical fashion to Joseph Joestar's Purple Hermit. This allows DIO to have precognitive skills, which he makes use of in Stardust Crusaders. DIO can do many things with this ability.
12. He's Hiding In A Castle in Cairo
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure really leans into the parallels between DIO Brando and Dracula, which are perhaps best illustrated throughout the Stardust Crusaders storyline. DIO is holed up in a large castle in Cairo, which he uses as his base of operations. This castle is quite intimidating and located out of place in the middle of the desert.
It seems a little hard to believe that this monument could be out there in the Cairo desert and not be disturbed by anyone else. This creates an eerie atmosphere for the final chapter of Stardust Crusaders, but is too impractical to set a real-world context for.
13. He Uses A Milling Machine as A Weapon
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a series featuring lots of great moments and it's the perfect anime to generate tons of memes from. One of the biggest examples of this occurred during DIO Brando's final fight with Jotaro Kujo, where he used a very unexpected weapon to finish off his opponent.
DIO freezes time, only to pull a steamroller out of nowhere in his attempt to destroy Jotaro. It's a very famous scene, but it makes so much sense.
14. He Can Turn Into a Dinosaur
Steel Ball Run marks a major change for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure universe. One of the changes it brings is how DIO Brando can return to the series in the form of Diego Brando from this universe.
Diego is attacked by a Stand named Scary Monster, and finds himself turned into a dinosaur. He also has the ability to summon hordes of hungry lizards for support.
15. He Spent A Century Alone In A Coffin In The Middle Of The Ocean
DIO Brando survived his second battle with Jonathan, and he was finally sealed in a coffin that sank into the sea after his ship caught fire. DIO spent a century alone in that coffin, which must have been very unpleasant for him. He had no chance of escaping either.
Finally, DIO's fortunes change when a team of unsuspecting fishermen drag DIO's coffin away, and they are unaware that the world's most powerful vampire is inside.
So, that's the discussion about DIO Brando, the main antagonist in the anime series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure which is quite controversial. In your opinion, are there any other facts about DIO Brando that haven't been mentioned here? You can share them in the comments section
