1. His meeting with Barry The Butcher was quite influential on his career

In the first Full Metall Alchemist anime series before the Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Ed and Al meet face-to-face with a serial killer named Barry the Butcher, who later becomes the protector of soul #66. The encounter took place early in Edward Elric's career, and being so young, Edward feared greatly for his life in combat. The Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood series skips an entire episode, and when #66 finds Alphonse outside Lab 5, he tells the former serial killer that he's never even heard of it.

2. He Often Covers Up His Pain with Silence

Edward Elric doesn't seem like the type to hide his feelings, but behind the many harsh events he's been through, Ed is hiding so much of his pain that he often gets confused.

According to Pinako Rockbell, patients with an automail usually scream loudly like a little girl's cry, but Edward never screamed because of the pain he was experiencing. He believed Alphonse was suffering from greater pain, and Ed deliberately kept his mouth shut and endured the pain out of respect for his little brother. Even as a child, Edward kept his tears to himself after learning that his own ambition cost his brother his whole body and Ed lost his arms and legs.

3. Nicknamed Full Metal Alchemist

With the nickname Full Metal Alchemist, there must be some interesting fashion choices that characterize Edward Elric. The eye-catching fashion choices were white gloves to make her automail sleeves blend better, a scientifically awesome-looking red coat for a smart look, and braided hair to keep her golden hair in check.

However, for some more relaxed moments, Ed changed his hairstyle, preferring a ponytail instead of a regular braid. Coincidentally, Ed and Al's father, Hohenheim, tied his hair the same way, and his name happened to come up in a conversation just before one of the father and son's hairstyles changed.

4. He Lost His Hands And Feet In A Human Transmutation

Even though all the rules of Alchemy had been explained beforehand to Edward Elric, he and Al were still willing to continue the dangerous process of the human transmutation ritual. The two of them dared to cross the line which had some consequences whose risks were unforeseen and had not been investigated by others.

An interesting fact of the transmutation attempt was that Edward's arms and legs became two separate transactions from the basic rule of alchemy, namely the exchange of equals. His right arm and Alphonse's body were taken for human transmutation, and Ed's left leg was taken to connect Alphonse's soul to the armor.

5. He is the Youngest State Alchemist in History

Edward Elric didn't get the title of State Alchemist the easy way. He was an extraordinarily talented child prodigy and had the art of Alchemy ingrained in him as the son of Hohenheim, and Edward studied hard to become the youngest State Alchemist in history.

In the first Full Metal Alchemist anime series, when Scar embarks on his revenge killings in Central, he and Ed cross paths in a unique way. Since Ed had left his Alchemist watch and temporarily retired from the military, Scar ignored Edward as a target for his revenge. During the meeting, Ed admits that he will most likely die that day.

6. He Competes with Al for Winry's Love

Edward Elric definitely has a weak point for Winry Rockbell, even if he shows it by arguing fiercely with her, despite being frequently hit in the head with a wrench by Winry.

While studying at Tucker's house, Edward gets caught when he tries to secretly write a letter to Winry. Normally, Ed and Al wouldn't contact their hometown outside of necessity. Alphonse thought that Ed writing the letter could cause a bit of trouble, of course, as the two had a subtle rivalry over who would eventually marry Winry.

7. He hates being called short

In his fight with the Slicer Brothers aka #48, one of the Slicer Brothers shot Edward Elric, calling him a shrimp, and he wasn't actually mad about it. However he was having a little bit of an upper hand at the time because he was losing blood, but there were moments when Edward cracked his short jokes.

The fight in Lab 5 isn't the only time Edward seems to have overcome his shortcomings. While hypothesizing what might have happened to Alphonse's body, Ed gives an explanation of his body being cut short. Winry and Al both gaped at Edward thinking he was making a positive move in accepting his short stature, although he was often angry when someone called him short.

8. He once visited the door of truth

Edward Elric had a clear talent, as well as a strong interest in the art of transmutation since he and Alphonse discovered their father's notebook when they were children. After their attempt to resurrect their mother, Edward is thrown into purgatory where a stream of information appears to be downloaded into his mind to enhance his abilities.

Finding himself before the "door of truth", Edward is given the ability to understand complex alchemy, and as such is able to figure out how to turn his brother's soul into a suit of armor inherently. It was a transmutation technique that was far more advanced than most alchemy techniques that an adult could perform. Even adults would have to study alchemy for years to do so. This is also the event that allows Edward to perform alchemical transmutation with just clapping his hands, and without having to create a transmutation circle.

9. The life of an alchemist is enough to burden him

Edward Elric hid a lot of pain, endured and went on with his life journey without ever shedding a tear or breaking down from the pressure, but that didn't mean Ed was the type of person who couldn't feel emotions.

Because Ed originally had the idea to become an alchemist and to attempt human transmutation, he carries a heavy burden of guilt because of the accident that happened to his sister. Ever since that incident, Edward had wanted to ask if Alphonse had any contempt for his older brother, but he was also too afraid of the answer his sister might give him.

10. His short body is useful for sneaking through Lab 5's cramped ventilation system

Edward Elric knew very well he was very short, and he was very self-conscious about it. Even when his stature worked better when he was able to crawl through the ventilation system of the cramped Lab 5, Ed couldn't help but admit his height right away.

An encounter with Dominic LeCoulte, an automail mechanic living in Rush Valley, gives Edward some hope for his height. LeCoulte told Ed and Winry that such heavy automail arms and legs might be stunting his growth, prompting Edward to start strategizing at that point.
