Did you know that the character Kelly Free Fire was inspired by Takako Chigusa in Battle Royale film who has a tragic story? Kelly Free Fire is one of the most favorite characters in this battle royale game. Her cute and energetic appearance resembles a Japanese Idol with her sprinting ability and the ability to avoid her enemies are the reasons why Kelly is relied on by many gamers.
Here are some facts about Takako Chigusa from Battle Royale who inspired Kelly Free Fire :
1. Battle Royale
Battle Royale is a film released in 2000 directed by Kinji Fukasaku and was a huge success despite its pros and cons. Renowned Hollywood director, Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill, Django Unchained), listed Battle Royale as one of his 50 favorite movies of all time.
This very memorable movie also inspired the birth of the popular esports battle royale game genre, such as Free Fire. The theme of this movie is a survival game in an isolated island, where all of the participants must kill each other with the weapons found in the game area or obtained from other participants who have been killed. With a time limit and the game area getting smaller, the game is getting fiercer and there can only be one person who survive and be the winner
2. Battle Royale Plot Summary, The Legendary Movie that Inspires the Video Game Industry
Battle Royale tells a story of a time in Japan, when juvenile delinquency could no longer be contained. The situation was distressing that the Japanese government was frustrated and launched a Battle Royale program / game to control the behavior of the teenagers. In this program, the government will randomly select one high school class across Japan. All students in the selected class will be isolated on a deserted island. There, they are armed with random weapons and a necklace locked around each other's neck.
Every hour, the zone on the island is narrowed and requires the people to move to a smaller zone if they don't want the necklace around their neck to explode. Within three days, they had to kill each other until there was only one person left. If within three days there was more than one person who was still alive, the necklaces around their necks would also automatically explode.
In other words, the government forced them to kill their own friends. If they refused, they would all die. What a brutal game!
This battle royale game is a moral test for its participants. Are humans able to maintain their morals as a human being in an emergency or not? Or, do they give in to the situation and make it as an excuse to kill others? All of that is well portrayed in this movie.
3. Takako Chigusa, the Battle Royale Contestant who Inspired Kelly Free Fire
Takako Chigusa and the class 3-B students have their own reactions to their participation in this game. Some choose to kill themselves rather than to kill their friends. Some choose to work together to leave the game.
There are also those who are frustrated and decided to kill their friends. Apart from that, they were also worried that if they decided not to kill: will their friends also think the same?
Chigusa is one of the participants who is a fast runner because she used to be on the track team. This young girl showed that she was serious when fighting against another participant called Kazushi Niida who threatened her and made a cut on her cheek with a crossbow. With a switchblade, Chigusa was able to finish off Niida after a fairly brutal fight.
Unfortunately, that was Chigusa's only kill. She was then killed by Mitsuko Souma, a contestant who enjoyed the game because she is a psychopath. As a member of a track team, Chigusa was able to run away from Souma. However, due to the gunshot wound, she was still badly injured.
Even so, Chigusa is a very impressive character. Apart from the fact that she was played by the famous actress Chiaki Kuriyama and her fight against Niida, we won't forget her death scene.
At the end of her life, Chigusa met Hiroki Sugimura, one of the participants as well as the guy she had a crush on. Chigusa’s final moments are very tragic and also heartwarming.
Kelly Free Fire was inspired by Chigusa's character. From her face, yellow track suit, her ability to run fast, and the scar on her cheek, it all made Kelly and Chigusa look exactly the same.
