Genya Shinazugawa is a supporting character of Kimetsu no Yaiba who’s yet to make more appearances in the anime. As one of the most unique characters in the series, Genya has some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know.

1. The Younger Brother of the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi Shinazugawa is the Wind Hashira during Tanjiro’s era. As a matter of fact, he’s one of the most powerful characters in Kimetsu no Yaiba who has repeatedly managed to give Upper Ranks demons a hard time.

As brothers, Genya and Sanemi have a problematic relationship. In the past, after demons attacked and killed their family, Genya blamed Sanemi for the deaths of their parents and siblings. And this led to a feud between them.

But later on, Genya regretted his action and joined the Demon Slayer Corps because of Sanemi. Yet somehow Sanemi initially rejected Genya. Although in the end, Sanemi would gradually accept Genya back.

2. He Experienced a Significant Change

Throughout the entire Kimetsu no Yaiba series, Genya is probably one of the characters who undergo a drastic change. Early at the beginning of the story, Genya was depicted rather as a juvenile delinquent.

But in the Butterfly Mansion, Genya grew into a tall young man and grew his hair longer. He also became more muscular and gained more scars all over his body.

3. Unable to Use Any of the Breathing Styles

Unlike other Demon Slayers, Genya lacks the aptitude to use any of the Breathing Styles. Breathing Style techniques are part of the things taught in the Demon Slayer Corps – as it allows the user to inhale the maximum amount of oxygen to enhance their physical and mental prowess.

Usually, a Breathing Style is also used to complement the user’s Nichirin sword when slaying demons. Therefore, Genya is often seen using his gun instead of a sword.

However, Genya has a unique ability called Repetitive Action, a technique that Gyomei taught him to compensate for his lack of talent to use the Breathing Style.

4. Repetitive Action

The Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, taught Genya a special technique called Repetitive Action to help him compensate for his inability to use any of the Breathing Styles. This technique requires Genya to repeat a set of words or phrases to help him focus on his task, keeping his mind clear and blocking out pain.

For Genya, he repeats a set of Amida Sutra prayers to gain focus and enhance his mind. In other words, this technique allows him to get the same effects of Total Concentration Breathing.

5. Mentored by Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei is deemed as the strongest Demon Slayer in the series. According to Kimetsu no Yaiba’s official databook, Gyomei considers Genya as his own son and he serves as a father figure to him. Gyomei also serves as Genya’s mentor, developing him to become his tsuguko (successor of one of the Hashira), yet Genya ultimately didn’t manage to become one as he’s unable to use any of the Breathing Styles.

Therefore, Gyomei taught Genya another technique to compensate for his lack of aptitude to use the Breathing Style.

6. His Abilities Keep on Altering

Most Demon Slayers have special abilities that are unique to them. As for Genya, his skill set is a bit different. Genya can gain demonic powers from consuming the live flesh of a demon. The stronger the demon, the more power he gains – yet it’s temporary and Genya will revert back to his normal human form after a certain duration.

Genya also has a unique combat style and always depends on the demon he consumes. And luckily, he’s quite smart to overcome his shortcomings in fights.

7. His Personality Changes Over Time

Initially – when he first joined the Demon Slayer Corps alongside Zenitsu and Tanjiro, Genya was a brash and ill-mouthed character. Genya had only one thing in his mind: killing demons.

He’s far from a warm and kind character. As a matter of fact, he refused to talk to Tanjiro until they had to fight a powerful demon together.

Ever since then, he began to show his softer side and give respect to fellow Demon Slayers, especially Tanjiro.
