Anime & Manga | 20 September
Kakegurui is a story about gambling in the school world that has been very popular since the manga's publication. Kakegurui is so popular that it received a prequel, an anime adaptation, and a live-action adaptation as well. The story in this anime tells about a school that has rules to always gamble. The student council president of this school is Momobami Kirari. However, her leadership begins to falter when Jabami Yumeko arrives at the school.
Jabami Yumeko is a gambling maniac who is willing to risk everything. During her time as a student there, Yumeko was eager to face the student council president. Because she thinks that only Kirari can satisfy her gambling lust. However, Yumeko also has to defeat all the other student council members who are also great at gambling. To give it more of a challenge, Kirari instead brings her family clan, Momobami, to compete with Yumeko as well in gambling.
There's never a dull moment in Kakegurui because it always seems like something crazy is going on. Curious about the Kakegurui anime? Here are the 15 facts about this gambling-themed anime!
1. The Gambling Theme Makes This Anime Unique
Various anime and manga can include various moral messages in them. In Kakegurui, the story focuses on high-stakes gambling which provides a moral message so that people do not want to do gambling that can cost everything. This story is also of the School Life genre, which makes the series very unique because there is rarely anything about gambling in schools.
2. Set In an Elite School for the Rich
Kakegurui is a series that is set in an elite school. In short, Hyakkaou Private Academy is a school for the children of the rich and powerful in Japan. For this reason, it is hoped that most of these students will grow up to be rich and powerful in Japan as well as their parents.
3. Strict Social Hierarchy
Social hierarchy is something that happens whenever and wherever many people gather in large numbers. However, the social hierarchy of Hyakkaou Private Academy is much stricter than most other schools. It is determined by each student's contribution to the elite school student council in Kakegurui.
4. The Gambling System is Crucial
It's quite common to hear stories about all sorts of crimes happening in the school environment, but quite extreme things also happen at Hyakkaou Private Academy. In short, there is a system in which the students risk what they have, with a sizeable amount when it comes to playing against other students.
This important system has a major impact on students' ability to contribute to the student council and become prominent in the social hierarchy.
5. Debt Slavery is a Common Thing in This Anime
Debt slavery is a serious problem, so it's a bit surprising to see this appear in Kakegurui. In this story, any student who cannot contribute to the student council due to gambling debts will get the despised status of a "house pet".
Basically it was just a different way of saying that any student with that status became a debt slave to whoever was owed it.
6. Rei is Sometimes Masculine and Sometimes Feminine
There are many characters in an anime that you assume genderfluid or trap, like Shun in Saint Seiya or Hideyoshi in Baka to Test. In Kakegurui, Rei is one of the characters that has been confirmed as a genderfluid.
Their character regularly seems to swap between more masculine and feminine looks, depending on how Rei feels. When enslaved, Rei looks more masculine, while after being released, Rei is shown to be more feminine. The duality of their appearance works well for Rei's character considering their fairly important role in the second season.
7. The Second Season Refers to the X Mark
The cross (X) in Rei's hand played a big role in the second season and was a big reason why the sequel was called Kakegurui XX. The "Batsu" in "Batsubami" refers to the same sign, namely batsu as the Japanese name for the symbol "x" which means "wrong". Little clues like this are often scattered throughout the anime. The name of the anime character can indeed describe how each character will act in the story.
8. Midari Has a Spin-Off
For anyone who's watched the Kakegurui anime, Midari is undoubtedly a memorable character. In a series with psychopathic characters, Midari is probably one of the best psychopathic characters.
Midari's masochistic nature has always put her in situations that no sane person would want. Given how unique the character is, it shouldn't be too surprising that Midori has a spin off series. The series centers on Midori and a new character named Ayame Nureba. In this spin off Ayame deals with the newly appointed head of beauty.

9. Live-Action Yumemi is a Real Idol
Kakeguri live-action adaptations don't always run smoothly, often a big disappointment because it's difficult to translate certain aspects of an anime into real-life scenes.
Kaekgurui live-action in 2018 has its advantages and disadvantages. But an interesting thing is Sayuri Matsumura, the actress who plays Yumemi, is a real Idol like her character. That's why the live-action version of Yumemi is very perfect in appearance and acting, because the personalities of the actress and Yumemi are indeed similar.
10. Sumika Always Competes Fairly
Fair fights in Kakegurui are as rare as in the Yu -Gi-Oh! series. Everyone seems to be cheating, and if you don't cheat it will cause the person who is playing honestly to be left behind by the other players.
Sumika was one of the few characters who managed to overcome that. Sumika often went to great lengths to ensure that her game was as fair as possible. She was even willing to bribe the audience, to vote for who they deem the best in fighting Yumemi's cheating during her match with Sumika.
11. Sayaka is Ambidextrous
This fact is a pretty important little detail in Kakegurui. Sayaka is shown to be ambidextrous between her two anime seasons. Ambidextrous is a term for a person who can use their left hand as well as their right hand.
In season 1, Sayaka uses the taser with her left hand, while in season 2, she is seen using the same taser in her right hand. The fact that both times she used a taser also tells you all about her character. Sayaka is indeed one of the more serious players in trying to win a game.
12. Continuity Error Regarding Itsuki's Nails
Kakegurui has some pretty gruesome moments as the penalties get bigger and bigger. One of those moments was when Itsuki tore her nails in a game with Yumeko. The problem is that by the end of the first season, Itsuki's nails seem to have healed and are no longer being painted.
After the second season rolled out, the first time we saw Itsuki still wearing bandages, the anime forgot that Itsuki's nails had healed at the end of the first season. This causes a great contradiction.
13. A Unique Casting Coincidence with Sword Art Online
One of the interesting facts about Kakegurui is a strange coincidence with Kirari's voice cast. Kirari Momobami's voice actresses are Miyuki Sawashiro in the Japanese version and Michelle Ruff in the English version, both of whom also voice Sinon in two languages respectively in Sword Art Online. This is a rather odd coincidence. Especially if you see Kirari is quite similar to Sinon.
14. Erimi is the Only Student Who is Not in Uniform
Kakegurui characters are easily recognizable by their distinctive red uniforms, all of the student characters wear the elite school uniform. The only exception to this in the Hundred Devouring Families is the character Erimi Mushibami, who is always seen wearing Gothic Lolita-style clothing.
15. The Protagonists Enjoys Gambling for the Thrill
The protagonist of Kakegurui, Jabami Yumeko, likes to gamble to enjoy the thrill rather than pursuing the status or wealth that some other students are aiming for. In other words, Yumeko just wanted to get the thrill of gambling instead of wanting the money she won from the gamble.
