The Thousand Year Blood Wars arc, which adapts the final arc of the Bleach manga into its newest anime series, also features Kenpachi Zaraki as one of the shinigami captains who stands out because of his strength. Tite Kubo's anime and manga franchise, Bleach, is a story about the supernatural and the afterlife. Many of the characters are black-robed Shinigami or Soul Reapers, who escort the souls of the dead to the afterlife. In addition, they also fight evil spirits, and the protagonist of the story named Ichigo Kurosaki immediately deals with the Soul Reapers. He meets many unique and terrifying Soul Reapers, including Kenpachi Zaraki who has a scary face.

This fairly tough and mighty character is the captain of the 11th division and was known for his brutal battle tactics. Kenpachi is a true swordsman, who only uses his zanpakuto and his powers to defeat his enemies, from Kaname Tosen, Nnoitora Gilga to Sternritter Gremmy. But he wasn't some reckless thug; there are many interesting facts that need to be known about this Captain. Are you curious about the strong Kenpachi Zaraki? Here are 10 things Bleach fans should know about Kenpachi Zaraki.

1. He Doesn't Want To Finish His Enemies by Giving Them Death

In the battle in Hueco Mundo, Kenpachi Zaraki clashed with his Espada opponent, Nnoitora Gilga (#5). Their duel took place very fiercely, and Kenpachi had a hard time dealing with the Espada's released form. But he found a way that was somewhat funny at the time.

But Kenpachi didn't want to deliver his final lethal strike, even when Nnoitora expected it. This happened. Kenpachi considered it unsportsmanlike to slaughter a defeated enemy and thought that if he had to kill his enemy, it would be against Kenpachi's principles. He also thought that one who tasted defeat must survive in order to train and become stronger for the next battle. Kenpachi, who is quite different from everyone else in his environment, believes strongly in the principle of sparing the lives of his enemies he has defeated.

2. He Has Good Sportsmanship

His sportsmanship may come as a surprise because Kenpachi Zaraki looks like a fighting madman. But more than a few Bleach characters stick to the warrior's code of honor, from Grimmjow to Ikkaku to Kenpachi Zaraki too.

Kenpachi wants to prolong every duel he takes, so he can enjoy it. To this end, he would hold back first and even allow his opponent to land his first strike. He does this with Ichigo in their first duel, and Ichigo fails to even scratch Kenpachi's skin because the Shinigami captain is so strong.

3. He Likes to Put Bells in His Hair

Kenpachi Zaraki has a quite unique hairstyle. Kenpachi has a simple way of bathing, and he always stiffens his hair with soap. That's why he can also style it, and he even put bells at the tips of his hair.

Kenpachi is too proud to ask someone else to put the bell on, though he struggles to reach the ends of his hair. He also once said that wearing the bell made it easier for his enemies to find him, so he could enjoy a duel where he could be satisfied.

4. He is a Character with the Figure of a Guardian

More than once in anime and manga, and even in Western fiction as well, you have seen the pair of 2 characters with the concept of a benevolent guardian taking care of their little master. For example The Iron Giant, or Big Daddy in the BioShock game, or Baymax in the movie Big Hero 6.

Kenpachi Zaraki has this concept as well, and his vice-captain or lieutenant is Yachiru Kusajishi who has a petite figure and a cheerful personality. She considered Kenpachi to be a large teddy bear, and never once was she afraid of him or his sharp Zanpakutō. He is also quite protective of her, as we saw when she disappeared in the battle against the Sternritters. Due to his dedication in looking after Yachiru, Kenpachi also deserves the title of being the best father.

5. He Gets His Shinigami Captain's Cloak After Doing a Duel

Every Shinigami Captain's white haori cloak is sacred, as Captain and General Yamamoto explained at the end of his battle against Sosuke Aizen. A Shinigami or Soul Reaper may only wear the cape as a captain's insignia.

Kenpachi Zaraki's Captain's robe looks very tattered, and that's because he got it directly from the previous Captain of squad 11. In fact, Kenpachi killed the previous Captain in a duel, which became one of the cruelest ways to become a Shinigami Captain. After that Kenpachi started wearing his cape as a kind of trophy of the battles he has won.

6. He Deliberately Wears an Eyepatch That Drains His Energy

Kenpachi Zaraki really wants to get stronger. But sometimes he also wants to limit his strength. Perhaps he didn't even realize that he was limiting his own power, and he had a strange relationship with his own ability.

Kenpachi once revealed that he wanted to reach a new level of power, especially after his shocking defeat at the hands of Ichigo. But he also goes to great lengths to limit his combat power, such as purposely wearing an exhausting eyepatch and refusing to use kendo.

7. He is a Swordsman who Often Gets Lost When Traveling

Like Roronoa Zoro in One Piece, some anime series have gag characters who find it difficult to find their way while traveling, and instead get lost until they end up somewhere.

Kenpachi Zaraki is the Bleach equivalent of such a concept, and instead he gets lost in the maze-like alleyways and barracks on his way to Ichigo's. Yachiru has done her best to act as a guide, but that just makes Kenpachi's problems worse and they get lost even more.

8. Before Becoming a Shinigami, He was a Street Boy Who Found a Shinigami Sword

Kenpachi Zaraki was not born as a noble like Captain Byakuya Kuchiki and Soi Fon. In fact, he grew up in the poorest and most lawless area of the Rukongai District. Every day there are incidents connected with violence and despair.

There, the young Kenpachi finds the fallen Soul Reaper sword, which does not yet have a shikai, and Kenpachi claims it for himself. He imprinted his own soul on it, and the sword became a Nozarashi. In fact, Kenpachi wouldn't learn the name until quite some time had passed.

9. He Impressed Yachiru Unohana

In the Bleach series, there are two characters named Yachiru. Years ago, Retsu Unohana who became the Captain of the 4th squad, was still the figure of a brutal woman named Yachiru Unohana, and she was similar to the current Kenpachi Zaraki. Kenpachi meets Unohana on the street, and they have a falling out.

Kenpachi was restrained in his duels and that's why he lost to the Captain of the 4th squad, but Yachiru aka Retsu realized that his much younger opponent was actually stronger than her. Because of this, Kenpachi was inducted into the ranks of the Shinigami.

10. Even though he's big and intimidating, he's still like a boy

When he was a child, Kenpachi Zaraki was one tough fighter, and when he became a man, he was even stronger than before.

He duels Retsu one last time after Yamamoto's death, and Retsu gives her life so Kenpachi can unlock a new, higher level of power. She is happy to die this way, but Kenpachi panics in his grief, not wanting to lose the woman who made him who he is today. Retsu himself commented with his last breath, that Kenpachi was almost no different from the street kid he met one rainy day when they were both younger.

So, that's the 10 facts about Kenpachi Zaraki, the Shinigami captain who only wears an eye patch in the anime and manga series Bleach. Do you think there are any other facts about Kenpachi Zaraki that you know but haven't included in this article? You can share them in the comments section.
