Aiming to become the strongest swordsman in the world, Zoro is a magnificent character and decently powerful swordsman in One Piece who travels with Luffy to train with powerful people throughout his journey.

Zoro is capable of beating powerful foes with the latest being Kaido whom he damages despite the latter being Yonko, thanks to one of Zoro’s most powerful techniques called Kyutoryu which allows him to multiply his swords by up to nine pieces.

Of course, there is more than meets the eyes, as there are some notable fun facts about Zoro’s Kyutoryu that you should know right here!

1. Sharpened When Encountering CP9

Zoro began developing Kyutoryu during his fierce battle against Kaku, a CP9 agent who turned into a humanoid animal and cornered him. As the name implies, Kyutoryu is a skill that unleashes nine swords by creating an illusion of the three-headed demon god with six arms.

After the fight, Zoro uses Kyutoryu three times with the latest being used during the battle of Onigashima to wound Kaido who declared Kyutoryu’s potential severity could increase if combined with Haoshoku.

Unlike Zoro’s other techniques, Kyutoryu can only be sharpened and mastered as a result of his determination and spirit to the point where he can unleash the illusion of the aforementioned demon god complete with the swords.

2. Similar to Kenshin Himura’s Technique

One Piece’s author Eiichiro Oda was once an assistant for Rurouni Kenshin or Samurai X’s author Nobuhiro Watsuki and his connection with Samurai X’s protagonist Kenshin Himura when designing Kyutoryu becomes very obvious.

Kyutoryu’s nine consecutive attacks is very similar to Kenshin’s Kuzu Ryusen technique which allows him to strike nine consecutive times with devastating strength. Whether Zoro’s technique is inspired by Kenshin’s technique or not, the similarity is apparent nonetheless.

3. Rarely Used by Zoro

Eiichiro Oda has yet to elaborate regarding the reason Zoro rarely uses Kyutoryu since he only uses the technique three times with a massive two-year gap between the first time he unleashed it against CP9 and during his latest fight in Onigashima.

Whether Kyutoryu is intended to be Zoro’s ace attack considering its destructive nature especially when combined with Haki or not, the answer’s not there yet. But well, that’s about the end of Kyutoryu’s fun facts that fans should know.
