Mikasa Ackerman is one of the toughest characters and certainly one of the fan-favorites in Attack on Titan. Aside from her combat prowess, Mikasa is also known for her beauty. Despite her popularity, there are some Mikasa Ackerman facts that most fans probably didn’t know about her.

1. A Descendant of the Ackerman Clan

From her name alone, you may already notice that Mikasa is a descendant of the Ackerman clan, aside from Levi and Kenny. Levi once asked Mikasa if she and Kenny were related after knowing that they shared the same last name.

It’s no coincidence that Mikasa and Kenny have the same last name as they are the direct descendants of the Ackerman bloodline. Much later on, Levi also finds out that he’s too an Ackerman -- a descendant of the royal family’s personal guards.

The Ackermans are hated for a particular reason: not having the same bloodline as the other people within the Walls. 

Since they don’t have the same bloodline as the others, the memories of the Ackermans cannot be manipulated by the Founding Titan's power, forcing the King to slaughter them as he’s afraid that they would reveal the secrets about life beyond the Walls.

2. The Best Graduate of the 104th Training Corps

During her time in the 104th Training Corps, Mikasa graduated top of her class. It didn’t come as a surprise given how powerful she is. From the 104th Training Corps, the only trainees who could come close to her level were Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt, all of whom were actually experienced warriors.

3. She Emulates Levi’s Combat Style

Mikasa always tries to improve her Titan-slaying skills. After witnessing Levi’s signature spinning attacks on a Titan, Mikasa tried to use it against the Female Titan in Season 1.

Given the intensity of the fight, Mikasa probably wasn’t even aware that she was using Levi’s move. Nonetheless, it’s an impressive thing to do considering Levi’s spinning attack isn’t an easy technique to pull off.

4. Cannot Turn Into a Titan

Mikasa isn’t a descendant of the Eldians. Therefore, she will never be able to turn into a Titan. And, as mentioned before, an Ackerman won’t be able to get their memory manipulated by the Founding Titan’s power.

As a matter of fact, the Ackermans are far more powerful than the average humans, and can actually match the power of a Titan.

5. Has Hidden Powers

In the anime, Mikasa has shown her hidden powers when she’s about to save Eren from her kidnapper. Her powers were suddenly triggered, forcing her to stab a knife into the trafficker’s body. This power was then described as “knowing what needs to be done.”

6. The Heaviest Female Character in Attack on Titan

Mikasa is the heaviest female character in the series. She even outweighs most of the male characters in the Survey Corps. Mikasa is standing at 170 cm tall and weighs 68 kg. So, the logical reason for her weight is probably because she’s all muscle.

7. Half-Asian

Mikasa was born to an Asian mother, whereas her father was an Ackerman. Since she was born to two strong clans, it’s not a surprise that she’s terrifyingly powerful.

8. Has a Bounty on Her Head

Since Mikasa is the only remaining member of the Asian clan, she has a large bounty on her head on the black market. As most fans would be aware, back when she was 9, a group of traffickers killed both of her parents and kidnapped her to be sold on the black market in the Underground Capital. Since she’s deemed as a rare commodity in the human trafficking world, many businessmen were willing to buy Mikasa at a high price on the black market.

It’s highly likely that there are still people who still seek after her.

9. The Origin of Her Name

The name Mikasa derives from a Japanese Navy battleship of the same name, a distinguished warship of the Japanese Empire and the mainstay during the Russo-Japanese war. Isayama once admitted that the character was named after the warship as he believed that a female character named after a historical warship would be popular.

10. One of the Most Difficult to Draw Characters

Mikasa Ackerman does have a very unique character design compared to the other characters in the series. However, that also means that Isayama requires more time to come up with the design. In the past, Isayama mentioned that Mikasa is the most difficult character to draw.

11. Her Design Was Based on the Woman Isayama Met on His Part-Time Job

Hajime Isayama got his inspiration for Mikasa’s character design from a woman he met on his part-time job before he started his career as a mangaka. He claimed to get the ideas for her scarf, hairstyle, eyes, and eyebrows from the woman. He also mentioned that he originally wanted to give Mikasa a western look much like the other characters in the series, but decided to make her half-Asian after seeing the woman.

12. Devoting Her Life to Eren

Ever since Eren saved Mikasa and welcomed her into his family, Eren has become the main source of power for her. Since Eren is her only remaining “family”, she’s willing to do anything to ensure his safety, pledging that she will follow wherever he goes as her only wish is to always be by his side.

13. Has a Strong Affection Towards Eren

Mikasa does love Eren in a romantic way -- not just as an adoptive sibling would. It’s often been shown that she actually has romantic feelings towards Eren.

There are so many reasons why she has such feelings for Eren, from the moment Eren saved her life when she was 9, Eren has been the closest person Mikasa ever had.

Another reason is that since Eren saved her, they’ve been living together and developed a bond as a family.

In Season 2 of Attack on Titan, there are lots of romantic moments involving Mikasa and Eren. Mikasa thanked him for always looking after her, showing her how to carry on with her life, and for putting his scarf around her neck.

14. Always Wears Eren’s Scarf

Mikasa always wears the scarf she got from Eren, as a memento that reminds her of the memory where Eren puts it around her neck when she’s lost all hope – when she just lost both her parents.

Since then, Mikasa has always worn the scarf as she sees it as something that helps her calm down.

However, Isayama mentioned that Mikasa would occasionally take it off when it’s too hot.

15. The Person Who Frees Ymir Fritz from Her Agonies

According to some theories, Ymir had been experiencing Stockholm Syndrome, which is a psychological condition in which a hostage/slave develops sympathy or emotional bond with the captor.

Ymir couldn’t set herself free from her feelings towards Karl Fritz, even after she died. Therefore, Ymir remained ‘alive’, searching for a way how to get herself out of her feelings.

That’s until she saw Mikasa, who fought her feelings and cut Eren’s head, although she loved Eren so deeply -- similar to Ymir’s feelings for Karl Fritz, which indicated that Mikasa already accepted to live without Eren in her life.

Ymir finally found the ‘freedom’ she had been looking for this whole time after seeing a true form of love.
