One Piece Facts: Get to Know the Gryphon, the Weapon Wielded by Yonkou Shanks!
Surely many of you don’t know about this Yonkou Shanks’ weapon, right?
Anime & Manga | 18 March
The weapon wielded by Yonkou Shanks isn’t just an ordinary saber since it has its own name, Gryphon. Being a weapon wielded by a Yonkou, Gryphon certainly has many superior features. Let’s find out more about this weapon in the discussion below!
Gryphon isn’t described in the One Piece manga nor its anime since it’s only been explained in One Piece SBS volume 87. A fan asked, "What’s the name of the saber wielded by Akagami Shanks?" Oda replied, "Oh, the weapon’s called Gryphon. Shanks has made an appearance since the first episode, yet at that time, I was still unsure of how he fights".
In the early episodes, Shanks wasn’t depicted with his saber since the opponents were just Lucky Roo and Benn Beckman. The Gryphon was first shown in the anime in episode 151, when Shanks goes up against Shirohige, to be more precise.
The Gryphon is longer than most sabers, with a long green handle. Shanks sheathes it in a blue scabbard on his right waist.
The name Gryphon derives from the legendary creature, the Griffin. For your information, the Gryphon is one of the most powerful weapons in One Piece, aside from Zoro’s Sandai Kitetsu and Mihawk’s Yoru. Without Gryphon, perhaps Shanks wouldn’t be able to become a Yonkou with the highest bounty.
Shanks had met with and spoke with Shirohige about Ace. Shirohige, who at the time refused to listen to Ace decided to fight him, but it ended in a draw. Shirohige was the strongest person in the world at the time, and not any random person could match his strength. Yet Shanks who wielded the Gryphon was able to hold Shirohige’s naginata, splitting up the skies into two parts in the process.
And do you remember the scene where Shanks comes to Marineford to stop the war? Shanks blocks Akainu’s magma fist aimed for Coby. Coupled with Haki, the Gryphon could withstand the blow that once claimed Ace’s life without a scratch. Both in the anime and manga, those were the only two powers of the Gryphon that have been shown in the series.
However, in One Piece Pirate Warrior 3, Shanks is able to perform Gryphon’s powers, for example, the "Kaizoku no Takami e!" technique by driving the Haki-coated Gryphon into the ground, Shanks casts a red lightning bolt to blow his enemy with Haoshoku Haki as the finishing blow.
Those were some of Gryphon’s superiorities that had been shown in the series. So, do you think the Gryphon deserves the title as the most powerful swords/sabers in the One Piece universe? Wait for another One Piece discussion on DuniaGames!
