The S.W.O.R.D organization made their first appearance in the Wanda Vision series, which is arguably quite surprising. This organization was reported to be an even more secret organization than their twin, S.H.I.E.L.D in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are many sophisticated facilities owned by the S.W.O.R.D Organization and also many surprising facts about the organization that can only be found in Marvel comics.
So, this time the Dunia Games team will discuss some facts about the S.W.O.R.D Organization that you might not know before. Let's see in more detail.
- Twin of S.H.I.E.L.D
Sentient-World-Observation-Response-Division or commonly known as SWORD, is an organization that exists at Marvel, which was first created by Joss Whedon in the Astonishing X-Men comic. SHIELD and SWORD are actually the same or almost similar, because what differentiates them is the range and also the level of threat they face. SHIELD will deal with threats from earthly or domestic creatures, while SWORD will deal with cosmic level threats.
- Founded by Abigail Brand
Unlike the MCU version, in the comics SWORD was actually founded by a woman named Abigail Brand in the Astonishing X-Men comic vol. 3 #6 in 2004. In fact, Abigail herself is a mutant, but not just a mutant, but she is an extraterrestrial whose genetics is inherited from her own father. Because it was founded by a mutant, it's not strange that SWORD is very close to the X-Men group.
- The Peak Is Their Headquarters
The Peak is the headquarters of the SWORD organization, as well as their space station which is located just outside the Earth's atmosphere. Not only does it act as a satellite for other security forces around Earth, but it is also a defense vehicle for SWORD. In fact there are various kinds of space bases that belong to them, but most of them will always end up with consistent damage resulting from the actions or goals of all of them.
- The MCU S.W.O.R.D Version Is Different from the Comics
You need to know, SWORD in comics has an acronym for "Sentient World Observation and Response Department", which is the main function of digging up intelligence or protecting Earth from threats related to extraterrestrials. But different from the comic, in the MCU the letter "W" stands for "Weapon", not "World". So thus, the organization was originally founded with the function of overseeing individuals who have super powers and potentially threaten the safety of Earth.
- An Organization Much More Secretive Than S.H.I.E.L.D
In fact, SWORD has a level of organizational secrecy that is also much more secret than SHIELD. That's because SWORD will operate secretly, watching over the entire world and planet. The goal is clear to overcome or monitor the various threats that arise, as well as being a representative of the earth in intergalactic diplomatic affairs. This was done, because they know that there are already a lot of alien races out there that could have a bad impact on the world.
- Placed Several Agents in Several Superhero Groups
SWORD is an organization led by Abigail Brand, in which she directs SWORD directly from a starship known as The Peak. In line with SWORD's goals, they secretly place some of their best agents in several superhero groups who are already suspected of having connections with extraterrestrials. For example, there is Lockheed, which oversees the activities of the X-Men and reports them to Brand.
- Their Headquarters Was Destroyed and Then Rebuilt
SWORD's headquarters is known as The Peak, which is a satellite that orbits outside the earth's path and is the first line of defense against alien attacks. Well, in fact, SWORD's headquarters, The Peak, was told to be destroyed in the Secret Invasion event in 2008. But that didn't last long, because then the world's governments succeeded in gathering funds and existing resources to rebuild SWORD's headquarters, The Peak.
- Some of Their Members Are Famous Superheroes
Not only has Monica Rambeau as the superhero Spectrum, but there are also several other popular Marvel superheroes who also join SWORD in the comic version. For example, there is Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman who joined when her reputation on Earth was destroyed. Then there is also Beast, a member of the X-Men who has an affair with Abigail Brand as the leader. Then there is also Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

- Very Important Role in the Secret Invasion
Even though it's not clear in the MCU, in the comics SWORD is an organization that plays a very important role in the Secret Invasion arc. So, this arc is a story that tells of the alien Skrulls race, who secretly invaded Earth by changing their form into a number of characters or superheroes that are known to many people. So with this incident, inevitably SWORD is an important organization that can help solve this problem.
- Once Disbanded and Replaced with H.A.M.M.E.R
From the Secret Invasion story, SWORD was once told to win and resolve the conflict. But after that, the SWORD organization was officially disbanded for some reason, then the group was changed to a new brand called HAMMER. Basically HAMMER is an organization that was taken over by Norman Osborn, with different groups and other goals or threats that they will face later.
- Similar and Same as Alpha Flight
In the comic version, SWORD has appeared in many Secret Wars events that took place in 2015. But unfortunately since then SWORD has not yet appeared in several future stories. However, Marvel Comics then introduced a similar but quite different program from SWORD, which was named the Alpha Flight Space Program. The organization has in fact been run by Captain Marvel, with headquarters also in outer space, to be precise on SHIELD's satellite, Triskelion.
- Henry Peter Gyrich, Controversial S.W.O.R.D Co-Captain
Henry Peter Gyrich was a government businessman who frequently harassed some of the most powerful powers on Earth. In fact, he is one of the most corrupt and controversial leaders to be co-captained by SWORD. In order to protect Earth, Henry even made a rule that made a number of innocent aliens be expelled, so it's no wonder he and Brand often clashed because of differences of opinion.
- Under UN Protection
Of course, because it plays an important role in protecting Earth or the world from extraterrestrial threats, surely many parties will support SWORD in carrying out their duties and obligations, one of which is that it is already under the auspices of the United Nations. But even though they are already under the auspices of the UN, unfortunately the UN does not know Brand's true identity as a mutant. Then they also don't know that Brand is actually working with other mutant members.
- Almost Was Mentioned in Thor (2011)
In fact, SWORD used to be the property of FOX, so that makes the introduction of SWORD in the MCU films somewhat cut. Now one of them is clearly in the 2011 film Thor, where Erik Selvig and Jane Foster talk about comparing their data with SWORD data. But unfortunately it was not aired, because the scene was immediately cut.
- Their Fate in the MCU
SWORD is starting to slowly get involved in the MCU story, which is precisely like Nick Fury who is currently in space, which could also be a reference that Nick is currently in the SWORD organization. Of course, it is very possible that the MCU version of SWORD will later be included in the TV series on Disney Plus Hotstar.
