Movies | 16 February
Sir Patrick Stewart has been acting for over half a century. During that time, he was in some of the most important franchises in cinema history. He began his career in theater, and his eventual path to film and television included him in everything popular from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Excalibur, X-Men, and American Dad. He's already in his 80s, but it doesn't look like he's going to stop acting anytime soon.
Patrick Stewart is rumored to appear as Professor X in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) film, Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness. Stewart is loved by the fans, and they certainly know a lot about him, but chances are, there's also a lot you don't know about Patrick Stewart. Want to get to know Patrick Stewart better? Here are the 10 facts about the leading X-men actor who is rumored to have appeared in the new Dr. Strange film!
1. Patrick Stewart Didn't Know Professor X Before He Played It
Patrick Stewart has spent decades playing famous characters, but that doesn't mean he knows everything about the characters he will play in his acting career. For example, he didn't know who Professor Charles Xavier was until he played him in the X-Men movies in the 2000s.
When he was offered the job, producer Lauren Shuler Donner gave him an X-Men comic, so Stewart would know what kind of character he would be playing. Observing the similarities of comic character Xavier with himself, Stewart gave the best reaction. He asked when he was surprised to see Xavier's look like himself on the cover of the X-men comic, "What am I doing on the front cover of this comic book?"
The producer replied, "Exactly." Donner went on to explain that not only did Stewart look like the character, but that there was an active campaign to make sure Stewart was the one who played Xavier.
2. He Never Learned To Play Chess Until X-Men
There are many scenes throughout the X-Men franchise that show Professor Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) playing chess. The two old friends often discuss important matters while doing so, and this scene dramatizes the deep bond between them. Interestingly, neither Sir Patrick Stewart nor Sir Ian McKellen knew how to play before they started shooting the X-Men movies.
Even though they could have faked the scene in front of the camera, they didn't. A chess master was brought in to teach them how to play chess.
3. He Has Been Bald Since He Was 19 Years Old
Some of his fans have seen Patrick Stewart with a bald head, it's because Stewart lost all his hair at the fairly young age of 19. Since then, he has had very little hair on the sides of his head and has been largely bald for more than six decades.
Stewart's baldness was discussed at the Star Trek series' first press conference with Gene Roddenberry working on it. Gene Roddenberry was once asked why baldness wasn't cured in the twenty-fourth century Star Trek, and he replied, "In the twenty-fourth century, nobody cared about that." Stewart even brought a wig to her audition for the character in the Star Trek series, but Roddenberry told him to get rid of his wig.
Stewart believes that losing his hair for a year means he won't have much opportunity to be liked by girls when he is younger. He felt that he was hindered from getting close to women, and he would have dared to do so if he had not lost his hair.
4. Playing Picard in Star Trek Changed Stewart's Personality
An actor often puts part of their personality into the character they play, but sometimes the process is reversed as well. For Patrick Stewart, playing Picard definitely had an impact on his personality. He explained it in an interview with the BBC in 2011:
“One of the things I understand is that when I talk a lot about Picard, what I find is that I talk about myself. There's some kind of double action going on. On the one hand, Picard is developing like this, and at the same time, he's also getting closer to me, and in some ways, I think he's even had an influence on me." said Stewart.
Stewart added, "I'm a better listener than I ever was as a result of playing Jean-Luc Picard because that's one of the things he does really well."
5. His Biological Son Played in Star Trek: The Next Generation
Patrick Stewart's son, Daniel, appears in an episode of the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series. The episode, entitled "The Inner Light", is considered by many fans to be one of the best episodes of the entire series.
In the episode, Picard is followed by a probe that places him in a simulation, causing him to experience life as a man named Kamin. In the probe simulation, Kamin has a son, and that son is played by Daniel Stewart.

6. He Turned Down Jafar's Role In Disney's Aladdin
There are hundreds of articles online detailing the various roles that the actors didn't take on, and for Patrick Stewart, that character is Jafar in the Disney animated film Aladdin. The role was eventually given to Jonathan Freeman, but the role of Jafar was initially offered to Stewart.
Stewart turned down the role because he had a busy schedule during the production of Aladdin, and Stewart regretted not accepting it because Aladdin was a huge success.
7. He Was The Narrator Of The Nightmare Before Christmas
If you've seen The Nightmare Before Christmas, you probably know that it wasn't narrated by Patrick Stewart. But initially, he was the film's narrator, and he briefly recorded his voice for The Nightmare Before Christmas. Unfortunately, Tim Burton didn't like the narration, so he cut Stewart's voice and changed it.
Luckily, Danny Elfman, the film's composer, liked Stewart's narrative so much that he included it in his soundtrack. This means that the film has Edward Ivory's opening and closing narrations, but the official soundtrack replaces it with Stewart's original narration.
8. Jean-Luc Picard had a French accent
The only complaint about Patrick Stewart's role as a Frenchman in the 24th century is that he has absolutely no French accent. In fact, the accent he uses throughout the Star Trek franchise is his own, which is a British accent. Actually the production of the Star Trek series tried to get him to use a French accent, but it didn't go well, as Stewart explains:
“Somewhere in the Paramount studios [which produce Star Trek], there's a piece of film or video, which has me on camera reading a scene in a French accent. They weren't sure if he had to be French or American or British." said Stewart.
His approach to the French accent was not to be taken seriously by the crew, as he sounded a bit like Inspector Clouseau, who said, "Space... Ze Final Frontier."
9. He Once Adapted 'A Christmas Carol' Into A One-Man Show
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is loved by many, including Stewart. Patrick Stewart once adapted this story into a one-man play, in which he played 30 characters in a three-hour show. He was originally inspired to adapt this story while working on the production of the drama Lady Jane in 1986.
In 1992, Stewart won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding One-Person Show. In 1994, he received the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for the Best Entertainment category.
10. He's So Obsessed With Shakespeare
Stewart's love for the works of the famous poet William Shakespeare started early. At the age of 14, his obsession with Othello began, and it became the drama he had always wanted to play. He finally got that opportunity in his old age in 1997, when he played the play Othello with the Shakespeare Theater Company. The play stars Stewart as the titular character, the only white actor in an all-black production.
In the animated film Gnomeo and Juliet, Stewart also plays a statue of William Shakespeare who can speak to Gnomeo, to tell a spoiler on the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet that he composed. Uniquely, the character of Gnomeo is played by James McAvoy, an actor who with Stewart plays Professor X in various X-Men films.
