Planet Namek is one of the most iconic locations in the Dragon Ball series. On this planet, Goku managed to awaken his Super Saiyan powers in his duel with Frieza — Planet Namek is arguably the first milestone of Son Goku’s journey with his friends.

There are some facts about Planet Namek that you probably didn’t know. On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to show you some interesting facts about Dragon Ball’s Planet Namek. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. Has 3 Suns and a Much Shorter Orbit Than Planet Earth

One of the interesting things in Dragon Ball is that the series considers gravity and atmospheric differences from one planet to another. The planets even have different vegetations and creatures.

In terms of distinct features of the planets, Planet Namek has 3 suns. This means, on this planet, the night never falls and time passes differently as Planet Namek only takes 130 days to complete its orbital period (130 days = 1 year).

2. An Extreme Climate Change Cuts Down Its Population

Planet Namek is a rather peaceful place, yet the extreme climate change in age 261 dramatically changed the entire planet. This extreme climate shift basically wiped out the entire Namek race except for the Elder Guru and several select Super Namekians.

Planet Namek was put in a critical place, but luckily, Namekians are able to asexually reproduce. This helped them gradually rebuild Namek’s population.

3. Was Only Populated by 100 Namekians at the Beginning of Dragon Ball Z

In 672, Planet Namek was only populated by 100 Namekians. However, that number is appropriate for this species. Throughout the Saiyan Saga arc in Dragon Ball Z, Planet Namek has rebuilt its population and found a new way of life.

4. Namekian Gurus Move to Other Planets to Become Guardians

One of the most interesting things about the Namekians is that they were featured in Dragon Ball long before it’s explained that they come from another planet. Planet Namek remains the home planet for Namekians, but some of the Elders move to other planets to forge their Dragon Balls and live a peaceful life as Guardians.

5. Namekians’ Materialization Ability Leads to the Creation of Namekian Dragon Balls

Namekians possess numerous unique abilities, one of which is magic materialization, an ability that is mostly used for the creation of Dragon Balls.

Dragon Balls weren’t always part of Namekians’ lives. But it’s revealed that the earliest Namekians found one of the Super Dragon Balls and took parts of it to create the original Namekian Dragon Balls.

The Gods actually gave them the permission to do so as long as they live peacefully.

6. Frieza Was Responsible For the Race's Endangered Status

The worst event experienced by Planet Namek was the race for the Dragon Balls when Frieza and his troops landed on this planet. Frieza and his men took no regard for the native Namekians.

Frieza was also responsible for the destruction of Planet Namek, which occurred on December 24, 762.

7. Namekians Took Refuge on Planet Earth for Several Years

After the destruction of Planet Namek, the Namekians went to Earth to take refuge. Since they had no planet to return to and their presence in public would likely cause panic, the remaining Namekians stayed inside the Capsule Corp with Bulma.

This helped the Namekians to have a greater affinity toward Earth.

8. New Namek

After spending years on Earth, King Kai discovered a planet with a similar atmosphere to Planet Namek. Later on, they established a home with Moori as their new Elder, and New Namek has become their home planet ever since.

9. Namekians Can Transform into Super Nameks, Who Are On-Par with Super Saiyans

In the Dragon Ball series, the most prominent transformation has been the Super Saiyan transformation. However, did you know that Namekians are also able to transform into an equivalent form called Super Namekians?

Super Namekians are a hundred times stronger than normal Namekians. Super Namekians also have a controversial history as they’re not allowed to be on Planet Namek, resulting in them becoming nomads of the universe.

When Piccolo fuses with Nail, he reaches his Super Namekian form. Lord Slug is also believed to be the last of the original Super Namekians who got banished from Planet Namek.

There’s also a red-eyed Super Namekian form that appears in Dragon Ball Online and Dragon Ball Heroes that seems to be much stronger than a “normal” Super Namekian.

10. Namekians Only Need to Rehydrate, With No Need for Food

Dragon Ball is indeed a series teeming with characters who have extraordinary appetites. Like Goku and Beerus who are able to eat a ridiculous amount of food. However, you may notice that in this series, Namekians, including Piccolo, don't share the same appetite that Goku has.

That's because Namekians have certain enzymes running through their bodies that convert water into essential nutrients. This means that they only need fluids to survive.

Even though Namekians don't need food to live, they can still enjoy the delicious taste of food.

11. A History of Trading with Other Planets

Planet Namek has a much deeper history than what has been shown in the series.

Daizenshuu once gave some details about the history of Planet Namek such as how they once turned out to be the greatest merchants in the entire universe. Namekians often trade with other planets in hopes of bartering or creating new relationships.

Daizenshuu also talked about the advanced technology and knowledge of the Namekian race, but everything changed after the planet's climate shift.

12. Namekians Have Their Own Way of Fusion

Before Potara Fusion and Fusion Dance became canon in the Dragon Ball series, Namekians had already experimented with the fusion concept.

Namekians can fuse two bodies into one, but this is permanent that combines the two Namekians’ souls into one host. This is a technique that Piccolo, Kami, Nail, and a number of Namekians from Universe 6 have demonstrated.

Surprisingly, when Nail and Piccolo fuse, Nail can still communicate with Dende through Piccolo. Additionally, when Piccolo and Kami fuse, Piccolo's personality changes slightly in response to a new soul being separated from him.

13. A Race with a Long Lifespan

Namekians had a very peaceful life on Planet Namek before Frieza came and decided to wreak havoc on the planet. The series offers a glimpse of Namekians’ lives and one of the most significant details is how long these creatures can live.

The oldest Namekian on record was the Grand Elder Guru, who reached over 500 years old. In contrast, Kami was 300 years old before he fused with Piccolo and ended his tenure at Korin Tower.

It is unclear how old the Namekians can get, but it seems like several hundred years is normal for them. It's worth mentioning that Namekian's power seems to decrease once they get significantly older.

14. The Great Namek Transformation, the Equivalent to the Saiyans' Great Apes

Some fans may not be so surprised to learn that Namekians share some similarities with the Saiyans.

The Namekians' Super Transformation is basically another version of Super Saiyan, and they also have a similar form to the Saiyans' Great Ape transformation.

Namekians possess the ability to grow dramatically and become Great Namekians. This ability was first used by Piccolo Jr, though at the time it still wasn't a major threat — not until Lord Slug began to put it to good use.

Lord Slug's Great Namekian form seems to be stronger than Goku in Super Saiyan mode.

15. Namekians Have Deep-Rooted Evil Within Themselves

Every Namekian has evil within themselves. Even though it's a fickle thing, it becomes an important impulse to deal with early on in their life.

When the evil within a Namekian is controlled early on, they can live a peaceful, pure life. However, if it's allowed to manifest itself, it may lead to some fatal ramifications.

King Piccolo and Lord Slug are perfect examples of when the inherent evil within Namekians is allowed to take over the mind.
