Roronoa Zoro is the "First Mate" or the first crew of Monkey D. Luffy. This man who dreams of becoming the strongest swordsman in the world has some interesting facts that only hardcore fans know. Curious already? Just take a look at the list below!

1. Zoro's Drawing Mistake

Since 1997, Zoro's appearance has undergone several changes. After the time skip, Zoro looks more different than before, and the most prominent change is the scar on one of his eyes, and Zoro is always seen closing it. The scar is located in Zoro's left eye.

In Jump magazine chapter 598, the scar was drawn on the right side of Zoro's eye. Oda then explained that it was a drawing error. In chapter 698, there is another error in Zoro's appearance. Instead of a line, the mistake was in the form of an X like the one on Luffy's chest as you can see in the image above.

2. His Job If He Wasn't a Pirate

Given Roronoa Zoro's immense ambition to become the strongest swordsman in the world, it's hard to imagine him doing any other job. Oda thought about what work Zoro would do if he didn't become a pirate.

This is explained in SBS One Piece volume 76. According to Oda, Zoro would be a policeman if he wasn't a pirate. According to Oda, Zoro has a kind nature that will protect the weak from crimes.

3. Has 2 Different Names

One of the things that confuse Zoro is that he has 2 nicknames, Zoro and Zolo. If you look at the swordsman who inspired him, Don Diego La Vegga or known as Zorro, then the correct pronunciation is Zoro.

In the 4kids version of One Piece, Zoro is known as Zolo. In Funimation, he is known as Zoro, while in Viz Media he is known as Zolo.

4. The Only Character That Luffy Planned to Recruit

To date, Luffy has recruited 10 crew including Jinbei into the Straw Hat Pirates. He cares deeply for his crew and will do anything to protect them. Even though in Luffy's eyes all the nakama are the same, Zoro looks quite unique.

This was because Zoro got Luffy interested in his reputation. Instead of being afraid, Luffy was planned to make Zoro his first crew. Zoro is also the only Luffy crew he wanted to recruit before meeting him face to face.

5. Has the Most Voice Actors

In the Japanese version, Zoro is only voiced by Kazuya Nakai. While in the English version, there are 4 voice actors who voice Zoro. It is known that Zoro is voiced by 4 different people, 3 of them are voicing him as a kid. In the 4Kids version, little Zoro is voiced by Andrew Rannells. Then, in the second episode of the Funimation version, little Zoro is voiced by Brina Palencia and Cynthia Cranz.

6. Becoming the Second Most Popular Character for More Than a Decade

Since 22 years ago, One Piece has held 6 polls of the most popular characters. From the first to the fourth poll, Roronoa Zoro always ranked second after Monkey D. Luffy. Zoro's popularity lasted more than a decade.

In the fifth character poll in 2014, Zoro entered the top 3 but he lost to Trafalgar Law who was in second place. While in the sixth character poll in 2017, Zoro once again took second place.

7. Never Call Sanji by His Name

Although Zoro is a pirate and also one of the Worst Generations, he is an honorable person who maintains good relations with his friends, except for Vinsmoke Sanji. The two are almost always at odds since they first met.

One of the interesting facts about their rivalry is that Zoro never calls Sanji by his real name. In SBS One Piece volume 73, fans tried to find the time when Zoro called Sanji by his real name, but couldn't find it. Meanwhile, Sanji once called Zoro by his real name.

8. The Second Person to Kill a Dragon After Ryuma

Before the time skip, Zoro had become a very strong swordsman. After spending two years training with Mihawk, he's gotten much stronger. So strong even Zoro was able to kill a dragon on Punk Hazard.

Zoro is the second person who can slay a dragon after the legendary samurai from Wano, Ryuma. In Oda's one-shot Monster, he confirmed that the manga is in the same world as One Piece and canon, and it showed Ryuma killing a dragon.

9. Originally Planned to be Buggy's Bodyguard

Can you imagine if Zoro was once planned by Oda to be Buggy's bodyguard? In the third manga, Oda explained it. Besides Mohji and Cabaji, Zoro was planned to be their older brother. In the end, Oda decided to make Zoro one of Luffy's crew.

10. His Name is Based on a Real Pirate

Of all the Straw Hats, only Roronoa Zoro is inspired by a real pirate. Roronoa is the Japanese translation of the famous pirate François L'Ollonais. This pirate had terrorized the Caribbean sea in the 17th century and became one of the cruelest pirates at that time.
