Sauron is one of the most feared figures in Middle Earth, even though it's only in the shape of an eye. Countless followers make this figure a character full of darkness. There are some surprising facts about Sauron that can only be found in books and have never been seen in movies or series.

The Dunia Games team will discuss some surprising facts about Sauron that are rarely known by LOTR fans. Come on, see more details in the article below.

1. He is a Maia

We know what you're thinking - what is Maia!? Unfortunately, The Lord of the Rings completely erased every reference to Maiar. The Maiar are basically powerful spirits who help the Valar (Gods) create the world.

Maiar takes many physical forms - some take the form of Balrogs, while others appear as wise old wizards (Gandalf and Saruman). However, Sauron is a very powerful Maia who comes from the Valar Aulë. Another Maia from Aulë? That's right - Saruman.

2. His Real Name is Mairon

Our old friend Sauron was not always known as "Sauron." He was actually known as Mairon, which means "amazing" or "good." While in the kingdom of Men known as Númenor, Mairon added the title "Tar" to his name, making him Tar-Mairon, or Great King.

He is widely known as the noble Maia who loves perfection. It was only later that he became known as Sauron, for "Sauron" is the Quenya (Elven language) term for "The Hated One." As you can guess, this happened AFTER all his wrong doings...

3. A Shape-Shifter

4. Influenced by Morgoth

As we previously stated, Sauron, or Mairon as he was then known, was the good and noble Maia. But he was quickly corrupted by Morgoth's power and ambition. Morgoth was the first Dark Lord, and Mairon quickly found herself serving as a double agent in Maiar's ranks.

After Morgoth gained enough credible power, Mairon turned around and openly opposed Maiar. It was this incident that caused Elf to call him the Hater, or Sauron. Thus, Sauron, as we know him, was born.

5. Blackened by Fire

The movies rightly attribute fire to Sauron. His rings were formed in Mount Doom, Sauron's Eyes are made of fire, and his fingers can be seen burning when Isildur cuts them. That was because Sauron himself was basically a walking fire. His physical appearance is rarely described, but Tolkien mentions "black hands" several times.

This is clearly seen in the movie, as Sauron's finger disintegrates like charcoal when Isildur takes the Ring. The Elf King Gil-galad also perished upon touching Sauron, a clear indication of his intense heat.

6. Morgoth’s Lieutenant

After Morgoth rose to power, Sauron became one of his most feared lieutenants. In the First Age, war was declared on Morgoth by the Elves, because Morgoth had stolen their Silmarils. The Silmarils are a very valuable and famous gem made from the Two Valinor Trees.

After Morgoth stole the Silmarils from the Elves, the Elves left Valinor and started a war against Morgoth, starting the Gem Wars. During this war, Sauron became the feared and powerful lieutenant of Morgoth. That is, until the defeat of his master. Then he ran like a coward instead of taking responsibility for his betrayal.

7. War between Elf and Sauron

After Sauron disappeared, he began forming the Rings of Power, which he evidently gave to humans, dwarves, and elves. Of course, he also created the One Ring, which was meant to bring all the other races under his command. However, the Elves recognized Sauron's betrayal and open war was declared.

The result was the War between the Elves and Sauron (not the most appealing name), and destroyed most of Eriador (the region in Northwest Middle-earth). Of course, Sauron is defeated and once again retreats to his stronghold in Mordor.

8. His Life as Númenórean

After the battle, Sauron was approached in Mordor by the Númenóreans, a race of Men from the island of Númenór. Their king, Ar-Pharazôn, approached Mordor and demanded that Sauron submit. Sauron appears fair (as we discussed earlier) and tricks Ar-Pharazôn into bringing him back to Númenór.

There, he became Ar-Pharazôn's trusted adviser and began tricking the Númenóreans into worshiping Morgoth. He basically destroyed Númenór from the inside. The plan worked perfectly.

9. Changed the Landscape of the World

This story proves how cool Tolkien's writing was. After Sauron infiltrated Númenór, he convinced Ar-Pharazôn to attack Valinor and attack the Valar. Essentially, he wanted Ar-Pharazôn to attack the gods themselves. However, the god Arda, Eru Ilúvatar, stopped that.

He sank the island of Númenór, destroyed the fleet of Númenóreans, and changed the landscape of the world itself, turning it from flat to round. This is known as World Change.

10. Was in Mirkwood

Sauron spent some time in Mirkwood, aka Legolas' house. After his physical body was lost in the Battle of Dagorlad (depicted in the movie), Sauron's essence took possession of the stronghold in Mirkwood known as Dol Guldur. There he assumed his necromancer form and became known as, The Necromancer.

The Elves did not suspect it was Sauron, and it was not until Gandalf was sent by the Valar that Sauron's identity became known. He fled back to Mordor, and the War of the Ring began.

11. Looked Like Gandalf

Although Sauron is often referred to as the "Dark Lord" and appears in a human body, he is Maia, a celestial immortal who is older than Middle-Earth itself. Like Gandalf, he is part of the Valar (albeit a lesser kind), an ancient race of beings who sent some of their members to guard and watch over the Freemen of Middle-Earth.

Sauron was corrupted by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, and thus became the form of evil we see in the movies. Nobody mentioned that even before possessing the One Ring, he was far stronger than an Elf, Dwarf, or Human in battle. He only took human bodies, like Gandalf, to roam Middle-Earth.

12. Once Kind

As Maia, he serves the stronger Valar, especially Aule the Smith, who is a great craftsman for the Valar. By this time Sauron was learning all about metal and forging. He came to like order, structure, and cohesion as Vala of Craft. Although Morgoth stirred discord and dissension with his ideas against the Valar, Sauron who was later named Mairon began to support him. His interest in order allowed Morgoth to successfully seduce him and make him his vassal.

13. A Great Blacksmith

By the time the Lord of the Rings trilogy progresses, Sauron is a void form of darkness, manifesting his evil will into the Large Unlidded Eyes and nowhere near human as he was before. No meaning of his previous self is conveyed, nor is it mentioned. This was unfortunate, as Sauron had many talents from his time in the House of Aule.

As a servant of Aule the Blacksmith, and a great practitioner of the craft for all the Valar, Sauron knows the "scientific properties" of working with magic and metals. The armor he wears as the Dark Lord in the trilogy is actually terrifying in detail due to Sauron forging it himself. In the DVD extras, a lot of attention is paid to it and why it looks the way it does, right down to the filigrine details.

14. Has a Solid Figure

In movies, Sauron is often formless and represents an obvious evil. He is a dark abyss, with only his eyes glowing in Mordor as an indicator of his physical form. After Isildur cut the One Ring from his finger, he was apparently no longer able to take human form, with the only way to become whole again requiring the ring's power to return to him.

In the books, he is Maia like Gandalf, taking human form. He appears human though "slightly bigger", missing a finger crushed by Isildur. Its presence, as it takes a slightly more physical form, is felt more real as a creature than a representation of darkness.

15. Aragorn Wins Against Him at Palantir

Palantir adalah artefak kuat yang dapat digunakan untuk mendapatkan penglihatan nubuat.

Palantir is a powerful artifact that can be used to get prophetic visions. In Return of the King, Aragorn looks up to him in an attempt to figure out Sauron's schemes, effectively engaging in a battle of wills with the Dark Lord. In the movie, Aragorn is visibly weakened by the loss to Sauron, whose evil power proves to be too great. In the books, this never happens.

Aragorn does look up to palantir in the books, but he is not the reluctant king he is in the movies. Aragorn understood the duties and responsibilities of his custody, and was able to look into the palantir with care, but without fear of Sauron's power. He has as strong a will as the Dark Lord, if not stronger, because he believes passionately in the power of humans.
